Human Rights Campaign HQ Glamdalized By Queers Against Assimilation
Last night, Obama spoke at the HRC fundraising gala and currently the HRC website declares, “President Obama underlines his unwavering support for LGBT Americans.” The vast amount of organizing resources the HRC wastes on their false alliance with the Democratic party leaves radical queers on the margins to fend for themselves. Our struggle has always had to resist the repression of conservative tendencies in government and society to gain liberation in our lives. The gourmet affair was sponsored by 48 corporations including giants Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, and Wachovia Bank. At $250 dollars a plate the HRC served our movement a rich, white, heternormative atmosphere that purposefully excludes working class queer folks. REMEMBER THE STONEWALL RIOTS! On the 40th anniversary of Stonewall, pigs raided a queer bar in Texas, arrested and beat our friends, and we looked towards politicians and lawyers to protect us. This mentality is what keeps the money flowing to the HRC and their pet Democrats, and keeps our fists in our pockets. Most of all we disagree that collective liberation will be granted by the state or its institutions like prisons, marriage, and the military. We need to escalate our struggle, or it will collapse. ~~Love and Solidarity~~ |

I dislike the HRC but this
I dislike the HRC but this is just another group believing they are representing all queers too instead of just themselves. Same old, same old. I'm so tired of a small group of people laying claim to a large portion of people that they don't actually represent.
And what did this
And what did this accomplish? Using authoritarian tactics to change HRC to behave differently? No. Some people just vandalized, no actual criticisms or anything brought to them in how they do things and doing this is hardly going to get them to think that they must change their mode of operation.
Anarchist cred or just doing something vapid like this helps with people to feel like "anarchists" but it hardly creates any change at all. Doing really absolutely nothing is equivalent to being a complacent liberal pretty much.
Telling people to stop
Telling people to stop speaking for you is authoritarian! WAH!
I didn't read anything in
I didn't read anything in the communique that claimed the action for anarchists or for all queers. But I do have to ask about paint vandalism being "authoritarian." In whose universe? Elevating private property into a sacred institution is pretty authoritarian, no? Especially considering that what props up that sacred quality is the full might of the State... And I don't think the point of the action was necessarily to get the wealthy white heteros to rethink their relationship to the HRC. It was a simple exclamation of frustration and an attempt to deligimize the idea that the HRC represents all people whose dignity is ignored and/or suppressed. The perpetrators (if I may be so bold as to put a few words in their mouths) were expressing the impossibility of adequate representation within a context of corporate sponsorship and high-priced liberal feel-goodism. Those clowns deserve a lot more than a few paint smears on the front of their HQ.
Considering the HRC is
Considering the HRC is another liberal group that basically assumes that the only type of queer folk worthy of fighting for are straight-laced, petit bourgeios gay folk and don't even lend any sort of support to trans folk ("that'll just have to wait") or proletarian queers and think the queer-rights movement should be working on the military and marriage, 2 institutions that are statist, authoritarian and reactionary, I say fuck 'em. They don't even address the general homophobia experienced in the workplace, on the street, or what people have to deal with every day.... all they say is to just ignore it until there's legislation for it, just keep putting your faith in the state to handle things it will never and can never solve.
Who cares? A lil' paint won't hurt 'em and it speaks to a feeling of disenchantment with them.

Can't say I'm really opposed
Can't say I'm really opposed to Don't Ask Don't Tell. Hell, it should be extended to include heteros.
i'm for anything that ruins
i'm for anything that ruins the military as a safe haven for right-wing rednecks.
and anything that destroys unit cohesion in the military as well.
the less of those right-wing christian fascists there is in the military, the less chance the military will ever be able to be used against us... and the greater the chance it'd be on our side. not that we're anywhere near that point.
nothing is good enough for
nothing is good enough for people on the internet...
Isn't this what all
Isn't this what all anarchists are trying to do nowadays? It seems as though we've stopped trying to have a dialog with other people and just assumed that they aren't worth talking to, that the tiny fraction of people that agree with us is all that matters. And not even that - only the tiniest fraction of people who agree with our particular form of anarchism is all that matters. After all, a couple dozen people can defeat the entire U.S. military, right?
The degree of naivety amongst anarchists is absolutely amazing.

Did you read the article in Details magazine on Back Back? Ackackackackack
There are no anti-authoritarian groups working to do the same thing as HRC, but instead of creating an alternative to it, anarchists pat each other on the back after they throw a little paint.

"Early this morning the Human Rights Campaign building was vandalized. Early police reports say that around 4am this morning the building was defaced. According to police the vandals used either paintball guns or balloons filled with paint. It appears to have been a drive by and the police have no suspects.
The vandalism occurred after HRC’s Annual National Dinner fundraiser where President Obama spoke. This was the most publicized dinner HRC has held because of the President’s appearance. Obama’s speech was televised live on Cspan and also covered by CNN.
Today is also the National Equality March where thousands of LGBT people will be marching for equal rights.
LGR will be following this story and will provide updates from the police as they come in.
At 4:30om EST today a group claimed responsibility by leaving a comment here on this post. Calling the act “glamdalism” the group states in their message that “a crew of radical queer and allied folks armed with pink and black paint and glitter grenades. Beside the front entrance and the inscribed mission statement (of the HRC building) now reads a tag, "Quit leaving queers behind."

I would rather see people
I would rather see people starting an organization that fought for things they were interested in and in the style of decision-making they prefer. To push for things they want, that would not have the government be involved like with the HRC, and to hopefully show the flaws of the HRC, and more importantly to get people to be able to be involved in and support something that helps with what they want instead of either going with the HRC because they see nothing wrong with it or because they don't have any other options really so they contribute to them to whatever degree. But that would take actual time, interest, and energy and no one is actually interested in that. It's best just to do something to feel like you are doing something when you are not actually doing anything.
