Philly Anarchy Fair schedule released

Philly Anarchy Fair Schedule

The Philly Anarchy Fair is this weekend!

The schedule is up! Location info by emailing: phillyanarchyfair@riseup.net.

There is a full participation DIY science fair at 2 PM on Saturday!
Bring a project, research, knowledge, whatever to share! It'll be set up like a traditional science fair with everyone setting up their trifold/poster/project/creation in zone two and being able to share with attendees taking a stroll and take a stroll yourself - be both presenter and presentee!

Food both days - do you like vegan corndogs and fresh made funnel cake balls?

There will be games in the morning and evening of both days and we'll be closing out Sunday with some water balloon based games to cool off!

Again - we hope to have all styles of fair present, create the world you want to live in - come prepared for a fair!

I'm glad it has a drop-out culture/lifestylist vibe to it. The larger world outside is not our problem.

First words I saw are "Science Fair"

Big non-sarcastic "Fuck Yeah!". We're no longer in bookfair terrirory here, and for the good reasons. Too bad Covid authoritarianism keeps me from coming...

Yes, let's remain sheltered in the useless post-academic bubbles of "anarchist" humanities and philosophy. That sure proved very useful, rite? Shit jobs at Wendy's and Amazon can testify.

A lil aid for your smooth brain: "science" is not a single, standalone institution. It's just a set of practices and methodologies aimed at solving problems, including the ones invented by other scientists' "problem solving". Like you know... that'd be cool to be having more anarchist doctors and nurses for autonomous clinics running on donations or being able to conduct contamination tests in water and soil without relying on state agencies.

But since I don't have any academic authors to cite on that I suppose this opinion is useless... :-(

are 8/24 @ 09:00 & 8/25 @ 06:04 the same anon? not that it really matters.

anyway @ 06:04 says ' "science" is not a single, standalone institution. It's just a set of practices and methodologies aimed at solving problems, '

no, science is not a single institution.

but it is definitely not "just a set of practices and methodologies aimed at solving problems,...".

science is a lens through which one looks at the world. that lens is concerned with determinacy, seperability & sequentiality and so whatever is outside that is deemed unreal or invisible.

some of the practices and procedures that fall under the rubric "science" are useful methods to know (observations, trial & error) and these have been used by humans (and others) since there have been humans. but, again, "science" is also a political (juridical, symbolic, economic & ethical) tool used by authorities to subjugate.

& if you are really concerned with doctors and nurses and the health of your comrades, wearing a mask should not be that big a deal.

There are only 3 different anons using anews in total and they're all the same member of thecollective having a bad day.

This type of event was a welcome change of pace. Between George Floyd and COVID, post-2020 fell into a weird "after the crest" burn-out feeling at some point in 2021. Like life in any major US city, people move around, friend groups change, and vibes are affected every couple of years, but the past two years were especially brutal for a variety of reasons. The anarchy fair was a low-stakes entry point for people to get to know each other in a more purposeful context--games can be a good ice-breaker, but attention was kept on how these games can be relevant for anarchists. This is something I appreciate as an anarchist who sees limits to acting like a 100%-hardcore-serious-antifa-warrior-superhero at all times. Socializing can definitely be taken too far, but it's also weird that some anarchists expect so much commitment/affinity to appear out of nowhere from people they don't get to know. Anarchists aren't co-workers...

The anarchist science fair was a big surprise! I wasn't really expecting more than one or two people to participate since it's a new concept (to me), but there were tri-folds about a variety of things (some playful, some more serious): using math to predict the random motions of a mosh pit, the experience of obtaining abortion pills online, animals destroying civilization, surfing by sighting how waves are moving, how to taper off your psychiatric medication, how to magnet fish to collect weapons from rivers so cops can't collect them as evidence, the history about the land the anarchy fair was held on, etc. Creativity abound!

Several distros attended so there was definitely still a bookfair vibe that felt familiar--good mix of free shit (including DIY screenprinted shirts and posters, pins, etc) and reasonably priced zines/books. I walked away with a nice mixture of wares.

Two days was A LOT, but the crowds looked pretty different across both days, so I'm glad there was room to work with people's schedules. Plus it was pretty fucking hot--fortunately I got drilled by a few water balloon at the end of day 2 to cool off. Food was great, but if I see another corn dog in the next 6 months I'm gonna hurl.

tl;dr: it was good to knock the rust off and plant some new seeds between anarchists in the area!

fantastic! kudos to the organizers and participants for making such a great idea happen! (starts taking notes for how to do one in my area) and thanks for the rport back!

Your welcome.

I’m completely against the wall. Last anarchy fair screwed me over, new checks haven’t started. My car was repo’ed this morning & my electric is on the verge of getting shut off.
I have no options left. Anything helps.
