Presentation of The Prisoner’s Herbal Book in Oakland

From It's Going Down

Presentation of The Prisoner’s Herbal Book at Hasta Muerte Coffee in Oakland, CA.

The Prisoner’s Herbal book is written for people in prison who want to learn about the medicinal properties of plants commonly found in prison courtyards. It contains ten detailed plant profiles, as well as instructions on how to prepare plant medicines in prison and more. It is based on my experience of using herbs through my 3.5 year prison sentence.

Two compañerxs have translated the book into Spanish – Jorge and Heather Anne. We have created two editions – one for people imprisoned in the Spanish state, and the other for people incarcerated across Abya Yala, the name in Guna for the so-called Americas, used by millions of Indigenous peoples across these continents. Learn more about the translated editions here.

There will be a launch event this October!

When: Saturday 22 October, 8pm. The 22nd October is the 27th National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation (see more here).

Where: Hasta Muerte Coffee, 2701 Fruitvale Ave, Oakland, CA 94601 (Lisjan Ohlone territory)

This event will be completely in Spanish.

As part of the presentation, the compañera Sofia will be speaking about prison conditions and specific cases of political prisoners in Mexico. Heather will be speaking about the book and will have a limited number of copies available to sell. I will be joining via zoom for a short time. Please share far and wide! We especially invite prisoner book projects that are keen to distribute the book!

If that "-xs" suffix is meant to be pronounced "-es" as replacement for the gendered suffixes, then why not just write it, in a similar way than in the Greek language? Nobody will pronounce "lxs" and other aberrations like this.

Eveytime I see those x'es they're a pain to read... like hiccups in the middle of words or sentences.

it’s fashionable for people to complain about the “e” implicit pronoun gender neutral ending too. i like that this annoys people and the specific types of people it annoys, it’s great.

it’s to be expect that despite this being such a great project that this is the only comment it gets. so i guess using “x”s and “e”s is great for engagement from the trolls, another great reason to use it.

Obviously only sexist White cis-gendered transphobes can be annotes byn it, DUH.

Coz the rest of the whole world's can't ever cringe about the "x" and further see the groups using itnas a bunch of fools.

Also I didn't that fashion of properly using then"e" instead. I think you might have just made that up, but gotta double-check!

I'm far more annoyed by the uncritical hitching of the wagon to the Oct 22 clowns. This outfit was created as yet another front for the RCP, and fuck them sideways.

I applaud the desire to gather and prepare plants as medicine. Sadly, when I did my time we only ever got out to the pathetic basketball rectangle (approximately 10x12 for about 40 guys. There was nothing growing on that enclosure, and there was chicken wire at the top of the 20-foot high walls. There was an enormous outdoor area but the guards never wanted to let us out because they claimed they were short staffed -- even though they always seemed to have plenty of coworkers when it was time yo impose some arbitrary punishment...
