What's New with Anarchy Planet IRC/Matrix

Almost five years ago we resurrected the Anarchy Planet IRC in an attempt to create a new space for anarchist chat. Anarchy Planet IRC has been around in various iterations on and off since 2005ish or so. We're still around, only now we also have Matrix, a modern federated chat with lots of bells and whistles and GUIs for those who prefer those kinds of things. The two are bridged together--There are IRC-only channels and Matrix-only channels, and there are channels where the two are intertwined; you can join IRC and chat with Matrix users and vice versa.

In both you can create your own channels, to make space for whatever (online) anarchy you want to see in the world. Maybe online anarchy doesn't interest you. We hope to find you one day, feral and boundless in the real world. In the meantime we invite you to join us on the Anarchy Planet IRC/Matrix.

We will be getting together on Tuesdays at 7pm PST / 10pm EST / 3am GMT in the #anarchyplanet channel to shoot the shit, discuss what we're reading, critique anews comments, and whatever else interests us. Be there!

IRC

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a (plain)text-based chat system. You'll find no frills here, just text and esoteric commands like /list to view all available channels on the server. No registration is required, and it's anonymous (and we don't store IPs). There is no channel history: IRC users who are not in the channel cannot see what has been said. You can also create your own channels with your own topics. And we have a fun bot! Great in a terminal.

How to connect

There are two ways to connect to the IRC:

  • Use the web client: visit https://irc.anarchyplanet.org in your browser.
  • Use an IRC client: Download an IRC client, and connect to the server at irc.anarchyplanet.org/6697. Make sure you enable SSL connection as the port 6697 is SSL only. There's also an onion address: i2b23rgkhpfcwyi5v7yyaeyhcarbqxxdm76ommzpno6245aufja5arqd.onion/6667

Once you're connected to the IRC, use /list to view a list of our public rooms. For more information about how to use IRC check out this tutorial. To learn about some settings you might want to enable on the Anarchy Planet server, go here.

Here are instructions for a few of the most popular clients:

Security

Please note that most IRC clients store chat logs of any channel that a user is logged in to, by default (this would be no different than, say, that user copy/pasting those logs). As all online/digital communication this platform is only as secure as you are.

Matrix

Matrix is a more modern chat system with many frills. It is decentralized, i.e., federated, so users on our server can communicate with users on any other (federated) Matrix server. Chats and rooms can be end-to-end encrypted, and it can save a persistent chat history. It has user avatars and voice/video chat and rooms and spaces and threads and widgets and bots and file attachments and emojis and stickers and polls and probably a bunch of other stuff as well.

Registration is required, but it is still anonymous (no email is necessary, and no IP addresses are stored).

How to connect

To connect to Matrix, first visit https://anarchy.chat to create an account with our homeserver, riot.anarchyplanet.org (you will need to enter aplanet for the registration token). Alternatively, create an account with our homeserver at https://app.element.io by changing the homeserver to riot.anarchyplanet.org during the registration process. Or you can create an account with any
homeserver using any Matrix client (e.g., matrix.org; Matrix is federated so different homeservers can all talk to each other).

*Not supported by Element on iOS, so use another client to register for the first time.

Once you're registered, there are two ways to connect:

Once you're connected, you can browse our public rooms through your client.

Mysteriously, it would seem that this time also happens to be the same time as the John Zerzan live radio show, "Anarchy Radio."

I'm quite sure this specific announcement is several years old, like back when A! was still down here and the channel was still alive, but hey maybe it's worth checking that tomorrow? Or not.

But I wonder why this got reposted, as I'm not seeing anything "new" here Why beating a dead horse?

Hello anon,
The announcement is not several years old, but rather several days old. It's a new post with some old information along with some new tidbits thrown in. It doesn't hurt to share a new announcement of an ongoing project which is trying to increase engagement and awareness that it's still out there, especially in the times anarchists using MSM mediums of communication like the Discord app.

The IRC has been alive since it resurfaced. IRC can be slow and it can also have fast paced conversations, sometimes people are AFK IRL and sometimes people are spending too much time at the keyboard complaining about things they don't really seem to know. Be the IRC you wish to see in the world!

it's not a dead horse, there's a lot of new information about a new chat vector and new channels and new web urls and new info about how to sign up. it's almost weird that you would yawn info the void of the Internet about how you're pretty convinced you've seen this content before when you haven't; so is the Internet not worth engaging with, or do you feel when you're consuming an Internet service you are you entitled to an experience you enjoy, and if that enjoyment is lacking then the project has failed? does a project have any obligation to entertain you? why the fuck to anarchists treat commodities as having a responsibility to please them?

-signed, at least write an interesting comment, anon.

"I can think of a thousand better things" like vagueposting on anews about how I can think of a thousand better things!! lol

I can think of seven things which is quite a bit more than you I guess:

1) talk to people face to face. why are you on anews complaining about the comments? I'm trying not to laugh, but you're literally using time to comment that anews is boring; if you have less boring things to do with your time, do them?
2) any act of crime. hey, there's lots of criminal things to do these days that aren't illegal; likewise there are lots of illegal things that aren't criminal! the possibilities are endless. have fun!
3) blow up the sun
4) be the project you want to see in the world. make it happen! post-left critics be damned! hope is not lost! let a thousand meetings bloom
5) get a hobby. ham radio maybe, or maybe guns, or perhaps BJJ, if you can stand to roll on the floor limbs entangled with another human being without feeling too gay or whatever. something practical!
6) microwaving chikky nuggies to wrap in a biscuit and dip in mashed potatoes (and then dip the mashed-potato-covered chicken nugget biscuit in the barbeque sauce MMM!)
7) elaborate shitposts on anews (MMM!)

don't worry. i don't think there will be much overlap. cyber geeks and primitivists. damn, i hope not.

Hey brah, primitivists use matches, cars, tv, and cellphones, mmkay!

Wassup... that IRC channel was dead for years, no? Why posting an ad for it, in 2023? Or is this 2013!? Time's running so fast, glowies!

> glowies

Are you the same trolltard that thinks glowies are secretly infiltrating anews comments to convince anarchists to not wear masks at public events because reasons? I hope not because that would be SO EMBARRASSING

"Are you the same trolltard that thinks glowies are secretly infiltrating anews comments to convince anarchists to not wear masks at public events because reasons?"

No, not that one... The other one. Covid fanatics are just communitarian dupes.

yeah i don't get the dang ol irc cause every time i say something it says ppl are in the room but no one responds. not into it. the anon shit makes it impossible because its always an empty chat box. its like either the software is lying and no one is in the room or nothing i say is interesting enough to get them to respond

when in doubt just slap someone with a fish

!fish [username]

Also pretty to know who's a bot or not, or just sock-puppeting. That's why I lost interest due to being unable to get who's "for real" in there, aside than maybe Rocinante. Also other issues like a mod being a blatant anti-anarchist and supportive of sus fash tendencies and hate speech.

dear anon, we're not always sitting in front of our screens, brimming with excitement wondering when you're going to log on next and ask "anyone there?" before logging off two minutes later, but if you read the announcement, you can now use the Matrix chat which let's you stay logged in even when you're also AFK living your best IRL life. come for the chat, stay for the gossip!
