Yea, the reason we're only doing U.S. stuff isn't because we don't think foreign news is irrrelevant or anything, its just because a lot of the @news we get up here doesn't focus on U.S. stuff - we figured only asking for stories from the U.S. might help get more of it.

I was excited to see a new anarchist paper in Seattle but looking at the site and its links to IWW and Mother Jones magazine (really? no really?) I'm a bit pessimistic about what comes out of this. KInd of seems like it positions itself as the alternative to Tides of Flame in terms of theoretical and practical perspective when its (loosely) the viewpoints expounded in that paper that have made the Seattle anarchist scene something to talk about and be inspired by.

It seems like shooting fish in a barrel, but I am always surprised by comments like this: "Women, queers and people of color strongly encouraged to submit." Does this really make these people submit more than they would otherwise? Are these groups of people constantly being excluded if they aren't constantly invited (or begged) awkwardly to be part of something? And if they are, is it simply because such lines in calls for submissions weren't written? It seems to me that this suggests these groups are inherently weak and unable to speak for themselves and need men, heterosexuals, and white people to beg them to say, do, or write things. I really find it very hard to believe that the average woman, person of color, or queer would see such a specific begging invitation and then talk to their friends and be like "Yeah this paper is inviting women to speak and usually that doesn't happen so I think it's important that we write something because we're finally being given the opportunity." I would think that if you're trying to gather submission through the internet, it's quite likely they will be more or less "anonymous" so unless they're screening people asking them to identify themselves as a woman, queer, or person of color, then what really seems to be suggested is that they want articles where such things are obvious because the content of the articles specifically focus on these identities and unfortunately probably valorizing them. Most of the things I read from an anti-capitalist or anti-statist perspective don't focus on the personal experiences, feelings, and identities of the authors and rather focus on......anti-capitalism and anti-statism. So if you are really looking for articles and talk about identity politics why don't you just honestly say that in the description? It would be more honest and hiding it in this strange way. Perhaps some might say "That's the problem with anti-capitalist/anti-statist writings, they don't focus enough on feelings, emotions, and identities of the authors!" Well, I disagree.

Mother Jones is whack. Don't know how that got up there. Tides of Flame was cool. Sad to see them go - i don't think anyone ever saw the free press as an "alternative" to them, or even particularly related outside of their both publishing anarchist stuff in seattle.

As far as asking women, queers and people of color to think about submitting articles... they are excluded from a bunch of projects. So that's a thing. and asking for submissions from people generally does solicit more responses from them. Hence writing any call out to anyone.

I don't really know where you got the rest of that stuff, but for the record, we aren't interested in publishing anything that could be considered related to identity politics... and only feelings and emotions as they relate to news. Its a news paper.

what do y'all mean by "new Northwest hard-copy paper"? At first I thought zines... but you mean like a magazine? Can I get some examples or clarification? Will it basically be like the Earth First publication?

Yeah. We're pretty sure we're going with 11x17 paper, with fancy printing on the cover pages and regular cheapo paper on the inside. Probably just a few pages per issue. Everything else will be on the website.

We'd love to be able to put out something nice like Rolling Thunder's fancy printing... but thats a shit ton of money.
