Did the Bureau of Prisons Acknowledge the Existence of Political Prisoners in the United States?

<table><tr><td><p style="text-align: left;">Not long ago, <a href="http://nycabc.wordpress.com/2012/07/15/daniel-mcgowan-having-some-mail-r... reported</a> on the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) rejecting packets of <a href="http://nycabc.wordpress.com/pppow-updates-announcements/">updates and announcements</a> that we send to prisoners every other week. One prisoner in particular, <a href="http://supportdaniel.org">Daniel McGowan</a>, has consistently been denied these packets. As a result, <a href="http://nycabc.wordpress.com">NYC Anarchist Black Cross</a> receives rejection forms from the BOP. These are typically boilerplate forms, with some note about the correspondence being "detrimental to the security, good order, and discipline of the institution." However, in June, the form was slightly different and so was the reasoning for the material being returned.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The form had a list of unauthorized materials with boxes next to each to be checked. You know, run of the mill stuff like "plant shavings." According to the BOP, we sent in "Other (specify below)." In the notes section read the following:
"CORRESPONDENCE INCLUDES MATERIAL WHICH CONTAINED UPDATES FOR POLITICAL PRISONERS."</p></td><td><img title="What would it mean?" src="http://anarchistnews.org/files/pictures/2009/danielmcgowan2.jpg"></td></...

<p style="text-align: left;"><img src="http://nycabc.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/mcgowan_bop_rejection.jpg?w=60... course this struck us as odd, considering that the BOP, and the entire United States government for that matter, consistently denies the existence of political prisoners in this country. You can download the entire document <a href="http://nycabc.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/mcgowan_bop_rejection.pdf">her...
So which is it, BOP? Are you imprisoning our comrades based on their politics and political actions? Or does the Bureau regularly hire incompetents like Correctional Systems Officer J. Gregg, who signed off on this rejection? We're guessing it's a little from column A and a little from column B.

the lulz, J. Gregg did it for them.

"Are you imprisoning our comrades based on their politics and political actions?"

is this a serious question?

"Advocating violence against correctional staff and endangering security" whaaat? BULLSHIT

wake up dickhead. we live in a prison-state. it might concern you.

You snoze, you loze.

i think maybe people are missing the point here. Its not that "surprise!" there are pol prisoners. yeah, duh.

but that the the dop or us gov might even accidentally admit is a public relations nightmare if it gets into the hands of the right muckrakers with enough time on their hands. it doesnt significantly change things for us, but its certainly entertaining and could result in some serious fallout. as banal as this may seem to us, it is actually unprecedented, and a big fuck up.

No it's not. No one cares. Snooze.

I don't think this is really gonna shake the framework of liberal democracy or anything, but sort of a pillar of democracy is the idea that you can have whatever crazy meaningless opinion you want and you won't be punished for that (because ultimately, dissenting opinions are either destroyed or co-opted by the structure of democracy) - so, maybe this could serve as an example of the fact that democracy is just a stable and recuperative form of authoritarianism that can revert back to "tyranny" whenever it's appropriate. Or maybe someone will assign a stupid liberal analysis to it and use it as proof that "we no longer live in a democracy!!!!!"

But whatever, it's something to do.

I concur with your fatalistic summary!

only college kid activists think that catching the state in inconsistencies or lies is some sort of victory.

EVERYONE knows the state lies. EVERYONE knows, and NOBODY cares.

I second, SNOOOOZE

Thanks NYCABC for sharing this

No surprise for me. The system is the enemy and they know it. It's similar to the Romans and the Coliseum games, keep them stupid, keep them happy. When something blows up in your face, create a distraction. Also when they have the most ingenious weapon of mass media (brainwashing people subtly enough that most don't realize it). Anarchism offers freedom but it may be too late for the world. Final score is everyone loses. People don't want to hear truth or even be really free. They have given up, they have grown stupid and embrace ignorance (as long as things "work"),if they try to turn to a leader, that leader is already bought and lying to them before they even asked for help. It's game over unless something changes in freedom's favor. Until then just stand in line and take your mark... or die trying to be free. For myself I take the latter always. Teeth and nails brothers, they shall take our lives but they will never take our hearts and minds. Resist control! We are the few, they are Legion.
