Russia: Waiting for the Wheel of History to Turn

Reflections on the First Phase of the Russian Anti-War Movement

The first phase of the anti-war movement in Russia is drawing to a close, suppressed chiefly by brute force. In the following collection, we discuss the stakes of these protests, share reflections from Russian anarchists about why the demonstrations hit a wall, and present translations of four articles by Russian anarchist and feminist groups exploring why they oppose the war, what challenges they have encountered, and how they intend to move forward.

Russia: The End of Peaceful Protest

via raddle.me

Peaceful and "legal" protest in Russia has been suppressed. Moreover, it is now impossible in principle: in a matter of days, the state has adopted a package of laws which make even shouting "No to War!" illegal. And liberal human rights activists are already handing out instructions: don't shout and write "No to War!", while pro-government journalists are making Orwell spin in his coffin by seriously producing stories that the slogan "No to War" came from Nazi leaflets.

Malmö, Sweden. Visit to Stalinists

from Anarchist Fighter

On the night of March 28, we visited the office of the Communist Party of Sweden. On the door of the office, we wrote “weapon to the people in Ukraine” (“Vapen åt folket i Ukraina”). The office of the Stalinists is located in a residential building, next to civil infrastructure. Therefore, the action was carried out in a “soft” form.

Black Rose/Rosa Negra Resumes Public Activity

In 2020 Black Rose / Rosa Negra (BRRN) began experiencing serious internal political conflict over the direction of our organization, its strategy, and its structures. The organizational turmoil produced by this conflict was greatly exacerbated by the psychological, social, and political strain brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and the George Floyd Uprising.

Anarchists Confront the Weaponization of Refugees on the Poland-Belarus Border

Nearly four million refugees have fled Ukraine since Russia invaded. But these are hardly the only refugees fleeing war-torn countries today. Starting in 2021, the government of Belarus has cynically used thousands of refugees displaced by wars in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Ethiopia, and elsewhere as a weapon with which to exert pressure on the European Union. EU governments have responded callously, leaving these refugees trapped in limbo between two militarized borders and establishing a restricted zone to ensure that observers could not see them dying. Despite this, anarchists organized in the No Borders Team network have defied the restrictions to provide assistance to the refugees in the name of a world without borders. We spoke with anarchists mobilizing on the border between Poland and Belarus to learn more.

Now Isn't the Time to Shut Up About NATO

Responding to Freedom News

The Russo-Ukrainian War that started in February has now cost as many as 15,000 Russian and Ukrainian lives, if not more, in addition to tens of thousands maimed and millions displaced. As anarchists in Australia, we oppose this imperialistic war just as we oppose all imperialist wars. In the wars of the ruling classes, it is the workers that are thrown into the meat grinder. By the same token we oppose the Russian state just as we oppose all states, which exist only to ensure the reproduction of the capitalist system and the ongoing exploitation of workers across the globe.Opposition to one set of capitalists and imperialist invaders does not mean support for another. Our solidarity is with the Ukrainian and Russian workers being sent to the slaughter, not the states that facilitate that very slaughter.

Part of the historic union CNT (Confederacion Nacional del Trabajo), our holdings span from the beginning of the workers’ associative endeavours in the nineteenth century, all the way up to the present era, including the momentous events during the Spanish Civil War and the Spanish Revolution of 1936-1939.
