Memorial for Portland activist now includes graffiti on Democratic headquarters

From Oregon Live

A memorial for a Portland activist killed outside the Democratic Party of Oregon headquarters now includes graffiti across much of the front of the building, including a number of anarchist and anti-fascist symbols, after a vigil was held Sunday night.

Police said they had not received any complaints about the graffiti. The bureau had no updates on its investigation Monday morning.

The Tower’s Statement on Backlash after the Bernier Demo

The Tower’s Statement on Backlash after the Bernier Demo

From North Shore Counter-Info, Hamilton, Ontario (From The Tower’s Facebook)

In the few days since the counter-demo against the Bernier event at Mohawk College, there has been an intense backlash against antifascists. In particular, we see as particularly vile the targeting of an organizer based in Toronto named Alaa, who immigrated to Canada from Syria. We are enraged to see him subjected to racist insults and threats targeting both himself and his family. This backlash has latched on to a video of an elderly person having an uncomfortable few minutes and being slightly delayed. This person experienced no harm, she’s fine, and afterwards went to a bunch of media outlets where she made comments about how her interest in Bernier stems from concerns about the Middle East, specifically Syrians, and how they have different values from ours.

Epstein, AirBNB, ICE, and Antifascism: An Anarchist Newsreel

From The Transmetropolitan Review

We are pleased to release our latest work, Epstein, AirBNB, ICE, and Antifascism: An Anarchist Newsreel, covering the last month of intense struggle. Beyond some of the major events in the United States, we touch on the anarchist neighborhood of Exarchia in Athens, the recent jail sentences of anarchists in Firenze, and the anti-immigrant rhetoric of Italy’s fascist Interior Minister, Matteo Salvini. Our film is meant to reveal the international scope of our current struggle, the similarities between Trump and Salvini, and the total depravity of the US ruling class.

Organise! Magazine Review of Van Deusen’s On Anarchism: Dispatches from the People’s Republic of Vermont

Reading this collection of essays, it’s clear David Van Deusen has lived an interesting life. To start, Van Deusen takes us on an exciting history of his involvement in The Green Mountain Anarchist Collective. He writes about efforts against racist group The Minutemen, daily struggles of organization and introduces the question of violence and non-violence used as a tactic and strategy, a topic he goes in to in more detail later in the book. Reading the first chapter on the history of Van Deusen and the collective he was part of does intrigue the reader to get stuck in to the book. It intrigues as you build a mental image of the man in your head and after the opening stories, you want to know what else he has been part of. Although the title may suggest more enjoyment for people familiar with the northeast of the USA, the book still has lots to offer those who are not. The second set of essays focuses on Theory, including two great reads The Rise of Capitalism and Authoritarian Communism as An Incomplete Resistance. These two essays are written with pace and vigor sometimes lacking in other parts of the book. Some of the essays are so crammed with theories and ideas, I needed a rest between them to let it sink in. A nice touch here: Van Deusen intersperses the theories with song lyrics from the Who, the Clash, Public Enemy and many others; this helps the reader to digest the previous essay and get ready for the next.

Antifa and its Discontents

A short letter about the big problems of the Antifa phenom in the contemporary U.S. to the publication "Commune." With its heavy focus on the fantasy projections of subjectively insurrectionary grad students and fealty to identity politics, the politics of "Commune" might be described as Miller Lite Maoism. In the same way that the sci-fi movie 'Planet of the Apes' generated a terrible sequel called 'Beneath the Planet of the Apes,' "Commune" is also being called by some wags "Beneath the Planet of the Jacobin Magazine."

Anarchist & Antifascist Thoughts on The New Zealand Shooting

From It's Going Down

March 15, 2019 marks one of the most horrifically visible manifestation of far-Right hatred that most can think of in the last couple of decades. A “lone wolf,” whose actions were incubated in hate filled internet forums like 8chan, posted a Facebook link to a live stream of him murdering 50 people and wounding an additional 50. The victims were from two different mosques, several miles away from each other in Christchurch, New Zealand, between the ages of 2 and 71.
