If the pigs push too far, this becomes another Hong Kong: the more force the pigs use, the more force the protesters use and the MORE (not less) the general public supports them. Hong Kong is starting to go to guns, but the Chinese government so far avoids "another Tianaman" for fear of trade repercussions. That means they will lose no matter what they do as China is fighting a limited war and Hong Kong is not. In other words, Hong Kong may become China's Vietnam, their Iraq. If they shoot too many people, an underground insurgency replaces open protest, and it goes to guns on both sides. If they cannot simply bomb Hong Kong to craters, they get an open-ended insurgency and people there are already talking about fighting to the death.

Do the Greek police want Exarchia to become their Hong Kong and maybe their Iraq? Do they want Exarchia to turn into the sort of hornet's nest of snipers and IEDs that defeated the US in Iraq and now awaits Turkey in Rojava and possibly China in Hong Kong as well? Even a more limited war, in which "Nov 17" style direct action starts back up, would be a huge price to pay for Greece's ruling class. Greece has a tough history and the current regime is playing with fire.
