there is no single "american type" of desert. where i lived was one type, but there are others. southern arizona and southeast california, for example, are very different from the high desert mesas i was referring to. as are the expanses of indescribably beauty in southern utah. or the cliff dwelling areas of northwest nm and southwest colorado.

but again, none of that disputes your primary points about the sensory contrast with urban life.
