Genova, Italy: Updates on the latest hearings in the trial against Anarchist Giuseppe Bruna (November-December 2020)

Translated from italian to english by malacoda

On the last hearing of the trial against Beppe (Genoa, December 2020)

The hearing was slightly better than the previous one.

The lack of transfer was not caused by an ad hoc measure for Beppe, but by the prohibition, by the DAP [Department of Penitentiary Administration], to extraordinary transfers, again because of Covid-19. Which, evidently, must be taken only in prison and not by going to court.

Nothing, on the part of the prosecution’s expert witnesses, was added. A defense witness was then heard.

The prosecutor also asked for Beppe’s presence in the courtroom. Therefore, the lawyer pointed out that, if the next hearing had been held on December 21st as scheduled, there would have been no breakthrough on the transfers.

So the hearing is postponed until January 2021.

— Updates on the hearings in Genoa (November 2020)

In Genoa, after last Saturday’s meeting in Banchi square [November 21, 2020], which saw dozens of comrades in solidarity with the approximately 300 anarchists at trial during this period on various very serious charges and with the anarchist comrade from Genoa threatened by the request for special surveillance, the hearings for the trial of Beppe [November 24], accused of having placed a canister of flammable liquid in front of a post office, and the hearing for special surveillance [November 25] were held in this city.

In the courtroom, the prosecution’s witnesses against Beppe testified nothing that added something to the inconsistent evidences, thus confirming the goodness of the defensive line which, on the other hand, is self-confirming given that the liquid could not even have ignited, having the trigger disconnected.

The horrendous jumble of PCs and cables for the videoconference hearing hardly worked at all, and we are pleased that the president of the court stood up to let the witnesses sit in his place. But we are not happy about the difficulties that Beppe and the lawyer had, so much so that it was requested and obtained that the comrade be present in the courtroom on December 15 when there will be the next hearing with the defence witness and, eventually, at all the hearings of this trial. In defiance of the prisoners’ translation block. Let them swab the cops since they unfortunately exist – and are infecting the inmates – and allow the inmates to speak out in the courts since they can’t feel the solidarity of family, friends and comrades in the courtroom, having also have the prison interviews blocked (and therefore the food parcels).

The next day the special surveillance hearing was held, postponed for two months to allow the lawyer to prepare the defence.

Solidarity with all those affected by the repression.

Our love for freedom is stronger than any authority.

— Note on the ongoing trials in Genoa

The trial against Beppe is a consequence of an investigation for which he received another pre-trial detention (in addition to the one for the «Prometeo» repressive operation) on December 17th, 2019, executed by the ROS (Special Operational Group) of Carabinieri. He is accused of placing an incendiary device against an ATM at a post office in Genoa in 2016. The device did not generate any flames and was defused. In that period, the Post Office was attacked repeatedly because of its collaboration in the expulsion and deportation of migrants through the airline Mistral Air (controlled by the Post Office).

In addition to this, Beppe is on trial, also in Genoa, together with Natascia and another comrade currently free, all investigated for the «Prometeo» operation (arrests of May 21st, 2019). The comrades are accused of «attack for terrorist or subversive purposes», since they are held responsible for sending three parcel bombs in June 2017 to prosecutors Rinaudo, public prosecutor in several trials against the antagonist movement and anarchists, and Sparagna, public prosecutor in the trial for the Scripta Manent operation, and to Santi Consolo, at the time director of the DAP, the Department of Penitentiary Administration, in Rome.
