I remember when I was in college and was doing a volunteer program in spain, and i ended up befriending some italians in the program and we just spoke spanish together. If you're from Canada or the US, it's a kinda wild experience if you're not defaulting to english 100% of the time...i remember how the class where any of the students rebelled in high school in mass was our spanish classes, "we don't need to learn that!", they would say...and given that english (internationally) is seen as the money language, there's a little bit of truth to it...

the drive to learn languages has overall been an adaptive experience for people, since it has been shown that adults have a harder time learning new languages...
