Think of the Persian empire’s invasion of Sparta under King Xerxes. On one hand you have a vast, liberal and multicultural empire with many effeminate aesthetics conducting a colonial siege, and on the other you have a tiny, ethnically homogenous, patriarchal group of religious fundamentalist natives defending themselves. Ironically this is essentially the same story as the invasion of Afghanistan by the US.
