WE ARE NOT AFRAID OF THE RUINS
NAPADEMA April 12-14, 2024

Three days to share and discuss experiences and projects of libertarian self-management

The Gathering will take place in at Urupia, a libertarian community in Salento.

After one year, a little further south...

We've always organized it in Naples but it was time to go down, at least a few miles, and go outside the cities, which tend-perhaps not because of greed but because of demographics and transportation structure-to monopolize every initiative. Let us reiterate the spirit of the meeting: we know that the supporting structures of human societies are bound to periodically crack or collapse, but how do those who propose a future of free and peaceful coexistence equip themselves? Unless we believe in parties or enlightened institutions-a case, however, that is not ours-a good attempt is to enter into a relationship with know-how, across the board, preparing the means to win a freedom that so little is worth and nothing lasts when it is granted from above.

But "knowing how to do" what? Whatever we deem to be going in the right direction, in the utmost correspondence between ends and means. Municipalities, carpentry, kitchens, publishing houses, it does not ultimately matter much where our intent goes, but the method, or more simply the search for a path. Which is not a separate or even distinguishable sphere from that of the destruction of the existent, and the solution does not consist in first preparing a demolition squad for the disciplinary society and afterwards a context in which it is finally possible to build something decent; but neither is it the other way around, where we can convince ourselves that scattering the planet with libertarian experiences is not only necessary but also sufficient for the desired overturning: the splitting of the two moments is a theoretical-practical shortcut that is humanly understandable, perhaps useful as a defense against the sense of impotence that besieges us at times, but very short-lived.

Some people like to start from long and complex treatises dealing with assumptions, analysis and details; here the suggestion is to ask for comfort, in the name of synthesis, from one who understood little about learned disquisitions but did about revolutions:

It is we workers who run the machines in the industries, who extract coal and minerals from the mines, who build the cities... Ruins do not scare us. We know that we will inherit nothing but ruins, because the bourgeoisie will try to tear down the world in the last phase of its history. But, I repeat, we are not afraid of ruins, because we carry a new world in our hearts. This world is growing right now...

Buenaventura Durruti, 1936

We are not going to have a conference, we have invited people and more will be added to tell their stories and confront each other, mainly from the south, but not only, favoring interaction over "conference." We thought that because of what it fields and represents (for almost thirty years), Urupia was the ideal place for Napadema, we hope you will share the choice.

The initiative is completely self-funded and self-managed

-----

Urupia is a place brought forward and sustained by people eager to experiment with practices of constant self-management and self-determination.

An agricultural commune in the Upper Salento that draws its livelihood from the self-production of agricultural products and the fruits of the land that surrounds it, from the work of its inhabitants and from the cultural, political and educational initiatives it hosts periodically.

Urupia is also an open and libertarian commune, nourished and alive by the contributions of people who pass through it, bringing their experiences and living it actively, through participation in assemblies and moments of conviviality, with confrontation and daily work.

The physical place where the commune arose is a farmhouse surrounded by olive trees, vineyards and fields, in a rural area of Upper Salento between the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto.

There are currently solar thermal and photovoltaic systems, a phyto-purification system, some wood-fired ovens, a winery, spaces for processing products, several dwellings and communal spaces.

But Urupia is also an ideal, abstract place, experienced differently by each of us: the best way to get to know it is to come and live and physically see what it is.
