International solidarity when things are not black and white

International solidarity when things are not black and white

From Roar Magazine by Peter Gelderloos

As 2020 is off to a rebellious start, a wave of struggles with growing intensity continues to sweep across the globe, from Chile to Hong Kong. People are rising up against government repression and austerity measures, or trying to defend themselves from right-wing coups. None of these uprisings are simple or homogeneous; some include elements anti-capitalists may strongly disagree with, and the necessity of self-defense against the advances of the far-right often puts us in a position of defending left-wing governments we may have well founded criticisms of.

Updates on the battle to defend Exarchia: for freedom, self-organisation and solidarity

Demo in Heraklion, Crete against evictions

The past few weeks have seen an intensification of the Nea Demokratia government’s efforts to subdue the Greek anarchist movement and crush initiatives that offer alternatives to prison society. In particular, the anarchist neighbourhood of Exarchia in Athens has been a focal point for its aggression. A rough chronology of this repression as well as actions of solidarity and resistance taken by comrades in Athens is listed below.
The current rumour is that the State wants to evict ‘all squats’ by 17th November. Another rumour puts the deadline at 6th December. Both are significant dates in the history of the Greek anarchist movement, which are marked by annual riots. What ‘all squats’ means is not entirely clear. What is clear from the past few weeks however, is that attacks have been made on squats both inside and outside Exarchia, and as well as in cities in other parts of the country.

A memorial for a Portland activist killed outside the Democratic Party of Oregon headquarters now includes graffiti across much of the front of the building, including a number of anarchist and anti-fascist symbols, after a vigil was held Sunday night.

Police said they had not received any complaints about the graffiti. The bureau had no updates on its investigation Monday morning.

TOTW: Solidarity

I’ve been monitoring the news lately, and it is bad. An anarchist and anti-fascist comrade was run down, presumably by fascists, Across the world, Turkish military is invading and decimating the YPG/YPJ held areas of Kurdistan, in Athens, the anarchist neighborhood of Exarchia is under assault by the state. All of these things seem both overwhelming and like things that call for actions in solidarity, and yet, I find myself unsure what would be effective.

First they take Exarcheia

From Roar Mag

Recent evictions of several squats, some housing refugees and migrants, mark the beginning of a new chapter of repression and dissent in Greece.

In the autonomous Athens neighborhood of Exarcheia on the morning of Monday, August 26, hundreds of masked riot cops with tear gas at hand cordoned off an entire block. Overhead, helicopters circled the scene.
