Universal Basic Income (UBI) is quickly becoming a hot topic this presidential cycle due to the likes of Andrew Yang and his supporters. Since he began his campaign, many other candidates have been interrogated about their support for the idea and more and more are responding positively, even if half-heartedly. Sadly some, such as Bernie Sanders, have remained skeptical of such a program and have instead called for measures such as a higher minimum wage and a federal jobs guarantee. Such solutions are rooted in backwards economic thinking and only serve to tie us further to the current state-capitalist system. A UBI, however, would offer us much more freedom from economic oppression and state bureaucracy while possibly paving the way for us to build an economic situation that is far better than what we have now.

Extinction Rebellion has managed to organise an impressive number of people into a civil disobedience movement. They have managed to shut down and occupy significant parts of London including numerous major road junctions over the past week. They have many admirable principles such as “breaking down hierarchies of power for more equitable participation” and “creating a world that is fit for generations to come”. However is civil disobedience really the best method for getting action to be taken on climate change?

The Future domesticates wild desire, limiting its capacity to explore spontaneous, unpredictable experiences.

“There’s no ethical consumption under capitalism” is a tired meme that I wish would die. So often this slogan is used by reds to pooh-pooh those of us that strive to make life choices that aid harm-reduction in our communities and our natural environments.

Should we do something like that? If we do who would we get to debate that would actually be interesting to a lay audience?

What would they debate?

How the fuck did we get here? Where the fuck is here? What do we do now? Questions like these are huge. They are largely unanswerable, because starting somewhere and ending somewhere else inevitably means so much space is lost during the journey. I’m not going to attempt to answer any questions here, because I don’t believe I’m in a position to give any, and would only trust my answers slightly more than the answers provided by people arrogant enough to believe their own.

While Justin Trudeau was in Hamilton yesterday (April 20) handing out free lunches at St-Patrick’s church, notorious for its anti-abortion activity, our beloved local paper The Hamilton Spectator decided to republish a long article from the New York Times entitled “What’s a Feminist Government? Canada, and Trudeau Grapple With the Question”. I was reading the morning paper with six or seven friends, and over waffles we read the article out loud and had a go at the questions it raised with a fair bit less bullshit than its author.

According to the prosecution, Karakashev posted a video allegedly calling for terrorism on his profile at VKontakte back in 2014 , and, in January 2017, he posted a text from another account which contained “propaganda of the ideology of violence” and “calls for terrorist activity”. It was not specified what the posts contained.

According to the defence lawyer, Yevgeny believes that the initiation of a criminal case against him was related to his activist work: he is a long-standing anarchist and antifascist who, prior to his arrest, was involved in a campaign against the construction of a tourist resort near his hometown. Karakashev will appeal his sentence.
