If you give the nazis everything they want, they will happily take everything else too.

So what if one person who used the term might have been a creep? doesnt mean its off limits forever. if it does, then all the fash has to do to win is associate themselves with all the things we like and watch us abandon it all without a fight.

Black Flame is a dope name and this is a cool project. i wish them all the best, and for a new and stronger association to be formed with the name they chose.

"Well ackschully the swastika is an ancient kewl Indian symbol and we can't let the nazis claim it because it's sO dope and based, mmkay?!"

Correct. there are religious and cultural groups who use that symbol to this very day who have nothing whatsoever to do with nazis. they certainly feel the way youve described!

Nazis count as "religious and cultural" groups. So as far as they're still existing, these symbols refer to them, and *not* these other religions from across the planet. The context of use in the West is the Western context, not the Indian or East Asian context.

I'm gonna be completely honest, I was 100% unaware of any connection that the term "Black Flame" had to anything, let alone nazi shit. In fact, I'm still not completely sure of the connection you're referencing. If I google Black Flame tons of different stuff comes up, mostly from the video game Elden Ring, and there's even an Anarchist book by the name Black Flame, though, I've never read it.

When picking the name, the thought process was literally "Black is like the Anarchist color and Flames are sick as fuck" and that was it.

Just wanted to clarify this.

Thank you for your kind words.

Your ignorance about a thing, that you're attempting to wedge yourself into, isn't the slam dunk response you think it is. This reeks of when anarcho-tourism becomes anarcho-gentrification.

Of course it's possible you're of the same "it's a cool ancient Indian symbol" ilk as mentioned above and none of this will register with you, but I hope it does.

TL;DR: Learn about a thing you're attempting to participate in. Learning is fun!

Perfect is the enemy of good.

Just sayin'

It's far easier to criticize than it is to create.

By your logic Nazis should create a lengthy book of names and symbols that they're deciding to co-opt, and we should all just go fuck ourselves.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to try to slam dunk anyone. I don't want this to get heated (pun entirely intended). I'm not ignorant about Anarchism, but I am ignorant about this one topic. I'm not trying to co-opt or hijack or gentrify Anarchism, or even necessarily wedge myself in, I didn't even want this to be solely *my* project, I want to collaborate with other people and use this to signal boost other anarchist projects and such.

I am now aware of the connection with National "Anarchist" defender Michael Schmidt. I don't really think this is comparable to the swastika though, as I don't think most people would associate the black fire symbol with Fascism. It is a worrying connection to be sure, but I've shown this project to a lot of Anarchist friends and even some Anarchist strangers before posting it here and this is the first I've even heard of that connection. That being said, I absolutely should have done more than 5 seconds of googling before settling on a name.

I'm going to put a lot of thought into changing the name. For the moment, I've already bought the radio domain, so it'll be a little bit before I change it, but it shouldn't be a huge problem to do.

I hope with a full heart that you land on NOT changing the name, but yeah its probably best to go forward with this in mind so youre prepared to deal with the dipshits when they do pop up and contribute their... whatever it is they think they are doing.

Youre fine. anon is a total slut for drama that nobody else in the world will ever consider. thirsty for it.

I'm anon 10:16 and I wish you the absolutely best with this project. Your sincerity and ability to communicate here (unlike EmmaAin'tDead and the other numerous reactionary/fashy trolls that haunt this place) is refreshing. In fact, I hope you take ownership of the name and make everyone forget all about Schmidt. Your/this project is very, very much needed.

by "anarchist context" you mean our real lives right now with a new generation that doesn't know that there was Once A Bad Thing Called Black Flame and don't care? EmmaAintDead is right there's no need to change the name on behalf of a project which no one remembers except a few very online anarcho-scholars.

Triviabot you've become so out-of-touch it's just sad. There are plenty of people in the milieu with memories that don't resemble overcooked hamburger even if yours does. You and EmmaAintDead can enjoy your little silo and let others enjoy theirs.

Your take is wild. It's literally just a music podcast it's not that deep (or personal?). Someone in the comments above said the top results for Black Flame were mostly about the Elden Ring video game which is all you need to know, really. Saying I'm out of touch for not cancelling the name of a new anarchist podcast (in 2025!) while calling me siloed off in the same breath is serious work though, loll. I'm just here for the comments and the flaming keyboard.
