A few days ago, one of my comrades sent me a relatively old text (https://t.me/stupidisthenewcool/1001) criticizing the statement by Russian anarchists on the war in Ukraine and the exclusion of Belarusian and Ukrainian comrades from public events in the “West”[1]. Most of the text is a perfectly adequate critique of the statement, but one thing struck me and made me sit down to write this text.
Namely, the argument that Russian anarchists are not putting enough effort into explaining the context of what is happening to Western comrades. For an Italian or German anarchist, it is difficult to understand the nuances of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine because the statement does not take into account the problems of European leftists in their own regions. I hear this line of argument not for the first time (more often in English or German), and I would like to take a closer look at how we ended up in this situation.
In the first years of the full-scale invasion, there was a relative myth among Ukrainian and Belarusian anarchists about the rationality of Western comrades’ thinking. In such a situation, various groups made efforts to convey the factual situation on the ground, mainly while trying to raise money in parallel. Literally in the first weeks, many of those involved in organizing solidarity started hearing about NATO, which dragged Ukraine into this war, and that if it were not for the cunning European generals, Ukraine would be a peaceful land, free from suffering. Even then, we were told that we did not understand NATO and the horrors of European imperialism, and that we were too focused on Russia. Here, of course, one can note the paternalism of Western comrades, who saw Ukrainians as incapable of critically analyzing what was happening in Europe.
Contrary to such mythology, anarchist migrants from Ukraine and Belarus have long been participating in political life in various European countries. Part of the alter-globalist movement in Europe made considerable efforts to ensure that anarchists from Eastern Europe were present at global protests alongside others. The whole history of this interaction cannot fit into this text, and maybe one day the participants in these events will decide to write their own memoirs. Anarchists from Belarus and Ukraine took part in protests against NATO, UN climate conferences, G20 and G7-8 summits. Understanding the global functioning of the political and economic system was key to shaping strategies of political struggle, and international solidarity made it possible to continue working even in the most difficult situations (for example repression in Belarus). Partly because of this orientation toward the West, many Belarusian and Ukrainian anarchists came to understand Russian imperialism and the history of colonialism only after the events of 2022.
Why am I talking about it? To point that Eastern European anarchists partly understood and do understand the contexts of struggle in Western Europe and the United States. But our focus on Russia is determined by the regional specifics of the current political situation.
On the other hand, there is a very different situation with the relative lack of interest in what is happening on the periphery. Europeans were not particularly interested in Belarus or Ukraine. For all my time in political activism in Belarus, the number of visiting activists from the West was minimal.
In this context, we come to the fact that Western anarchists really do poorly understand the situation in the region of the post-Soviet empire. This could have been forgiven before 2022 (although even then there was already arrogant ignorance regarding political processes in Ukraine itself — see the stories about the fascist regime in Kyiv and support for far-right forces in the east of the country). But after 2022, ignorance turns into a conscious choice, and there is no excuse for it. A contemporary activist in the West has far more opportunities to learn about what is happening in one region or another than people from less stable economies. And in this situation we return to the previously mentioned text about Europeans lacking context. Today I do not believe that providing any amount of context will help Europeans understand what is happening in Ukraine. Many western activists have no interest in this understanding. Among other things, this is connected with the need for a radical rethinking of one’s own political theory, which few are ready for.
In the atmosphere of this chosen ignorance, activists from Ukraine, Belarus, and even Russia find themselves in a situation where not only are we denied solidarity, but there are also active attempts to prevent any interaction with the “dissenters.”
I absolutely disagree that at this stage it is our duty to chew over facts for Western activists so that they can understand all this in a softer context or somehow relate the situation to themselves. When I joined the anarchist movement, we all knew the slogan “think globally, act locally,” but unfortunately today the first part is becoming extremely difficult for people from the most privileged countries. And while Fortress Europe continues to close itself off more and more, we see that a significant part of the anarchist movement follows the logic of isolation from its own comrades in the hope of avoiding ideological difficulties in understanding the modern world.
A few years ago, one of my long-time comrades from Greece was outraged by my words that the modern West is a castle from which people dictate the rules of existence to the rest of the world, and that local anarchists, no matter how critically minded they are, also live in this castle and prefer not to leave it. Almost five years into the full-scale war in Ukraine, I suddenly noticed that additional signs now hang on the gates of this castle, urging people to stay away from the organized anarchist movement of Belarus and Ukraine, and it becomes clear to me that entering the halls of this castle was a privilege until the moment we began speaking about inconvenient things. And no matter how much context we include in our future texts, no one will let us into the castle of ideologically pure anarchism anymore.
1: Here and below, “the West” refers primarily to the countries of the old and new empires of Europe and North America.

The West *is* a castle from which people dictate the rules of existence to the rest of the world. And one of the rules Western states proclaimed is that Russia shall not invade Ukraine and everyone shall support the Ukrainian state in its fight with the Russian state. If you back Ukraine you are on the side of the Western castle.

It is definitely important to mention the imbalance of acknowledgement of each other context's that exists between Eastern European anarchists and their Western (hypothetical and not only) comrades.
Or, I would rather say, the willingness to even learn about it.
Still, I see highly problematic the use of supposedly interchangeable categories of anarchist/activist. I most countries I know these are very different sectors which may coincide only sometimes in bigger mobilizations. Also, the anarchists in Western Europe aren't monolitic movement, many even consider that currently don't exists an anarchist movement as such a but various currents and tendencies which may or not converge in certain moments. And internally there are lot of divisions too, for example informal anarchists in Italy are split over dealing with known perpetrators of sexualised violence in the scene, while some parts of Spanish anarcosyndicalist CNT had splits on the issue of transphobia...
So, rather than castles we deal with various trenches.
I think in all this debate the most interesting part is the center vs.periphery and construction of hegemonic opinions.

If not, it's not clear what you're talking about here.
There's also a lot of people in the "Western castle" being treated like shit by those that control the narrative and safekeep properties for their own ilk. Marxians are somewhat right in calling it a "class war", as it's not the lesser-haves in the Western world who're deciding what's being done with the big money and military industries.

There are many false premises in this text. For one, the author is speaking as if "Ukrainians" are a monolith, that all ukrainians support the state and militarism. This is not the case, as evident by the many ukrainians who have fled the country, rather than be turned into cannon fodder, and the courageous resisters of forced conscription, who have used guerrilla tactics against the brutal human trafficking of people sent to their deaths in the frontline by the ukrainian state.
Next, there is no such thing as Russian imperialism. Imperialism is a system that imposes total domination upon the oppressed. It is not about disputes over territory. The ukrainian state, as a proxy force for NATO and the US is the representative of imperialism in this dispute. Economically, russia ranks below many of the NATO states individually, not to mention the combined force of those countries with the US. It was not unreasonable for Russia to view Ukraine joining NATO as a red line and an existential threat. Just witness the us's imperialist and genocidal aggression against Palestine, Venezuela and Iran since then.
Lastly, the author downplays the fascism of the ukrainian state, calling those who mention this arrogant and ignorant. This is a country with many overtly fascist military units and where Nazi collaborators like bandera are glorified as national heroes.

Wikipedia is not an accurate source to determine what imperialism is. Again, as I wrote, imperialism is a system that imposes absolute dominance over the oppressed. It is a tool of hegemonic world powers that are continually expanding outward, not just through invasion or bombings, but also economic coercion, and covert methods such as staging coups, assassinations, etc. Russia is not nearly economically powerful enough to qualify as an imperialist power. It is not, as some claim, threatening all of Europe. It has been four years and the Ukraine war is still at a stalemate, so how could it possibly act as a true imperialist power, like the US, even if that was its intention?

Not the anon you're replying to, but I think you're partly correct... Just that what defines an imperialist power ain't its capacity, but its "might". An historical constant that defines imperialism is when a power sees the world as its own domain, and sees no theoretical limit to it. The USThat's why even smaller powers like Turkey, Israel and the Saud regime are imperialist powers, as they only see neighboring (and more than neighboring) regions as places to take over, not just lands they see as "theirs" over some historical reasons (like, say, Kashmir or these BS artificial islands in the South China Sea).
The distinction, tho, feels mundane to me. These are all billionaires' states by now. Their goal is just profit and power. It's not imperialism that made Putin sail his superyatch across the Hormuz Strait, at the height of the US/Israel-Iran conflict, with US troops being told to stand down. Pootin hasn't got imperialist ambitions for this region... he only has had good buddies on both sides and that's probably why he could enjoy this entitled rich man's "freedum".
It's poors, globally being shat upon and brutally mass-murdered for the games of a bunch of "amoral" billionaire rapists & (often) pedos. The discourse over imperialism seems tired and awward these days. Many states have devolved into feudalistic capitalist powers... that are a "natural" evolution from neoliberalism.

I am not the person you're responding to, but I for one can of course provide examples of this. One example is a self-proclaimed "anarchist" group called Anarchistisch Collectief Antwerpen privately contacting a NATO collaborator/agent called Johannes De Corte to complain that I had published information about several people they were promoting (Petrovichev and Samoylenko) being members of far-right military groups (OUN and DUK respectively) and talking about their efforts to suppress this information: https://imgur.com/a/jSTgEn5
This NATO guy then proceeded to create profiles of multiple members of our group on a Myrotvorets-like doxxing website to denounce them with a bunch of bullshit accusations:

What list? I gave links to 2 profiles of members of my organization which we know were created by that NATO guy after having been contacted by this Anarchistisch Collectief Antwerpen, one of whom identifies as a situationist and the other I don't know, haven't asked. What questionable views on politics are you talking about?
And what does it even matter? If something like this doesn't qualify as sabotage then I don't know what does. And since that NATO guy was stupid enough to take a screenshot of that private message he received and post it online, we can easily determine that the reason for them privately contacting him with this was indeed that I had made this information of Petrovichev et al public.

If by "questionable views on politics" you mean the claims made on those profiles, you need to understand that those profiles are anything but good-faith representations of their political views. Those profiles are highly manipulative hatchet jobs with stuff ranging from outright lies to out-of-context quotations. I figured that would've been obvious from context but maybe it isn't.

That site was made by some German guy as a sort of international version of Myrotvorets. It seems to include all sorts of people with the only common denominator that they openly oppose the NATO war effort. For example the president of the largest anti-war NGO here and organizer of numerous anti-militarist events, Ludo De Brabander, is also listed with some bullshit profile (most likely by the same NATO guy that listed those members of my org as well): https://www.zombak.net/identified/rascists/De_Brabander_Ludo/De_Braband…

And a particularly stupid one at that. Not only did he post his private messages online, allowing us to know who exactly contacted him and what exactly they said, but he also made it very easy for us to find out that he was the one who had created those profiles of our members on that site. For example if you take a look at the last screenshot used in Peter's profile, a screenshot of a facebook post featuring Victoria Nuland, you will see that the laugh react is highlighted beneath the post. This means that this screenshot could only have been taken by someone who put a laugh react under that post, and there was only one such person, that same NATO guy Johannes.

Another example is another such group called Anarchist Collectief Brugge demanding the organizers of an event for cooperatives to ban our participation explicitly on the grounds that we had published that information on Petrovichev and Samoylenko.
A third example is the leader of a group called IASI/ACAB-AIT writing a document together with that NATO guy Johannes De Corte and another NATO and police collaborator called Pieter Vanderwee slandering us as "campist" and "pro-Putin" for having published that information of Petrovichev and Samoylenko and demanding our bans from anarchist events and organizations. This particular one was further picked up and supported by the Network of Anarchist Internationalists, showing that this isn't just limited to supporters of this so-called "anarchist resistance in Ukraine" but that even anti-militarists themselves sometimes engage in this.
And then there are more examples of censorship and bans than I can remember over the past 4 years. Having been the first person to make this information public about people like Petrovichev and Samoylenko being members of far-right military groups all the way back in 2022 I've seen it all by now when it comes to self-proclaimed "anarchists" engaging in censorship, sabotage, slander, and bans.

It's not about the context in Ukraine being better explained to anyone, it's about the context in Germany, Italy and Gaza, and the fact that Russian and other European anarchist supporters of the Ukrainian war effort don't care about Gaza. Draw your own conclusions about Ivansky regarding this and the whole reverse racism thing he or his friend brought up at Saint Imier.

As far as I can see from the text you brought up it is a comment from Masha - an anarchist in exile from Belarus part of group called Belarusian Anarchists in Warsaw working mostly with belarusian diaspora in Poland.
There is a lot to unwrap just in this comment. For example the racism of the western europeans towards most of the slavic population of Eastern Europe that exists for many centuries already. Such paternalistic approach towards people from slavic countries is well documented in case you are interested. Among anarchists this is also an issue that pop ups from time to time here and there. It has little to do with what you describe here as "reverse racism" and has a more complicated history that apparently need more context (that you are not really interested right?)
Masha is well aware about the struggle of palestinians and contributed to it enough to avoid any random comments on internet. Belarusian, Ukrainian and even russian anarchists are well aware of the situation happening in Gaza and Israel as many have jewish relatives and friends (again, the context of the region where most of the jewish population was deported to from the whole Russian Empire, but you also don't really care about that context right?).

I know you're an expert in Soviet Union style whataboutism but have you considered that western european racism against Slavs doesn't cancel out racism by Slavs toward non-white people in Palestine or Native people in the Americas?
Or for that matter, Ukrainian antisemitism, the OUN ethnically cleansing Lviv of it's Jewish population in WWII and then present-day "anarchist" soldiers in Ukraine joining units that see themselves as continuing OUN tradition, the Solidarity Collectives even uncritically posting a pic with an anarchist flag next to a Right Sector / OUN flag. By these measures you and your comrades care even less about Jews in your own part of the world than you do about Gazans.
Since you love whataboutism so much, since it was the whole point of your article to deflect from the other person's about Gaza and Iran, let's mention that Ukraine has been buying Israeli weapons since 2022 at least and is supporting Israel and America's war on Iran and Lebanon, both politically and with weapons sold to the Gulf monarchies. Or what about the time you badjacketed a Palestinian group on social media? Whatabout all that? Why should anarchists in the West care about openly racist and pro-imperialist manipulators like you?

It all boils down to a very simple concept: Palestinians and Native people in the Americas are not less human or less valuable than white Ukrainians, are not to be sacrificed for your NATO-backed and Israeli-armed war effort against Russia. Just because you might consider Russia to be the only state or imperialist power that matters doesn't mean other people being targeted by NATO or Israel are going to agree with you. Just like people in Ukraine don't think that Russian imperialism is ok just because NATO imperialism also exists. If some person on the street randomly punches you, you're not gonna think, this doesn't matter to me because someone else on the other side of town got punched too. You're not gonna turn the other cheek just because bad shit also happens elsewhere. Hope this helps.
