[I am writing as an insurrectionary anarchist in the u$a and speaking to that context]
Unity Of Fields is a counter-info project that emerged in August of 2024. They describe their project as “a militant propaganda front against the US-NATO-zionist axis of imperialism.” It used to be Palestine Action US and has since changed its orientation. It has a website and some social media accounts, some of which have are banned at the time of this writing, they seem to be most popular on Telegram. Although it links to mostly anarchist sources for technical knowledge, Unity Of Fields does not seem to be an anarchist project and their political reading and media suggestions are all over the map. They suggest classic decolonial texts by Fanon and Cesaire, Black liberation writings from the BLA and BPP, texts from various Palestinian resistance factions, as well as authoritarian communists like Lenin and Mao among others.
Mostly their website is a clearing house for news, action analysis, and communiques. Many of the communiques posted are original submissions though they also repost from other counter-info projects and from social media. They also post some of their own original writings to their website. The fact that they post sketchy criminal stuff and link to technical advice on how to better carry out insurrectionary forms of struggle is probably a large part of why they are discussed in anarchist circles at all.
What does the emergence of a project like Unity Of Fields mean for us as anarchists? For one thing Unity Of Fields expands some spaces we occupy as anarchists — the combative struggle space and the digital counter-info space. We are clearly not the only ones re-coloring walls, opening windows, and carrying out our little sabotages and then writing about it, though at least for now others seem to look to our collective knowledge and experience for technical guidance. We are sharing a struggle space, one which is not limited to riotous moments and combative demonstrations, with other rebels who have made themselves visible to us. We are being included (at least some of the time) in a dialogue with other rebels through the sharing of our words and news of our actions, and anarchists have shared writings from Unity Of Fields on our own websites.
Local struggles against zionism, imperialism, and colonialism are visibly taking on more destructive, decentralized, anonymous, and autonomous approaches, a long-term dream of insurrectionary anarchists, yet new questions arise for us. How do we want to contend with other rebels with whom we have ideological differences and tactical similarities? How do we avoid getting lost in the vanguardist, unifying, nationalist tendencies that often accompany revolutionary leftist approaches to combative struggle? Are we interested in conspiring with these others outside the spontaneity of spiky demonstrations, occupations (and potentially riots), and if so how?
As anarchists we both seek to expand and connect anarchic forms of struggle yet also hold a healthy skepticism of unity with people who don’t hold anti-authoritarian views of freedom. Our history includes many betrayals by the left and progressives, from peace policing at demonstrations to executions and imprisonment from newly established revolutionary governments. The question of who to coalesce with and why is not an easy one, and one that is best addressed on a case by case basis. The appearance of Unity Of Fields potentially facilitates the dialogues and understanding that can help us better decide if and how we want to team up. As anarchists can often find ourselves isolated from others who we may have some political parallels with, the opening up of a “militant propaganda front” is a bridge to dialogue and learn across. This is not a call to join forces with anyone on the basis of being anti-zionist or anti-amerikkkan, it’s simply a reminder to always be analyzing the changing terrain around us and to think critically as we carry forward our struggles.
“Towards The Last Intifada” and “Towards Another Uprising” seem to be the beginnings of a dialogue among anarchists that address some of these questions. I look forward to more.

PS: Some Thoughts On Spectacle
Many if not most of the actions posted to Unity Of Fields are accompanied by some visual media, usually photos, sometimes videos. I want rebels to consider some pitfalls of spectacularizing our struggles. Every photo or video is another crumb for the state to eat up as part of their investigations. Digital media can offer up metadata about where and when and what kind of device it was recorded on if not properly removed. Footage that shows rebels gives the state valuable information, such as number of participants, approximate time of day, whether any passersby were present, as well as biometric data even when a person is masked. Height, skin tone, gait, approximate weight, and other information can be determined from even grainy footage.
Additionally there are the downsides of understanding our struggles in a quantitative way. This approach may blunt the qualitative changes that participating in struggle can bring us individually and collectively. Of course propaganda is useful, the seductive appeal of revolt is made easier with imagery, and these things must be weighted out, no struggle will be pure. I want to remind us that though this is the path that is being worn into the ground, it is not the only one, and should we choose it let us choose it intentionally.

Yes, anarchists should look at the last century of betrayal and then enlist in the army of the Ukrainian state, or work alongside the United States army in Rojava, not team up with their local civilian who happens to be a fan of Stalin. Let's keep things in perspective. Random people who run websites are worse than actual states and their armies.

It's way harder to find a willingness for action, risk-taking, and sacrifice in potential accomplices than it is to de-program maoism and other kinds of ideological hang ups. Not saying entryism, but if we take people as individuals and aren't scared off by those hang-ups, often times people still have a will for action after the disillusionment. Furthermore, anarchists should be more open to navigating the wake of the chaos and openings groups like maoists and islamists present.

There are many people(some who I actually like) who are not so much maoists, but they have been infected by the language and the terms that go back to that whole thought complex. What post-leftists need to do is create choke and counterpoints to that radical language structure. Things like decolonization, anti-oppression that sort of thing.
In regards to action, the problem is the action that people do take is informed by that toxic pseudo radical language. I think what good radicals need to do is re-foundationalize their whole orientation starting with active imagination which transforms into consciousness and subsequent new imaginary structures of thought which downstream into new political and positional structures.
There's nothing creatively chaotic about maoism or islamism, they've been around for a long time now. What we need to do is create new radical ideas and be aware of emerging media ecologies that fuel new forms of thought and action.

Yes, a plethora of derogatory adjectives are categorically required for this spurious, managerial and mediocre doctrine. Oh if only Mao had read some superlative Neech, or delved into some eloquent Camus in his smug megalomaniacal adolescence, he may have delved deeper into his confused and caffeinated mind and sought a more internalized empathic vision concerning more intelligent uplifting and liberating processes to raise the peasant hordes out of their archaic superstitious and barbarically servitude to their elitist and privileged masters. But no, he took the binary path to a dull and polarised objectification of existence. I just can't stop the adjectival tsunami!

Mao's contradictions abound. His father, Mao Yichang, was a formerly impoverished peasant who had become one of the wealthiest farmers in Shaoshan. I wonder how that happened? He was a C.R.Y.P.T,O. C.A.P.I.T.A.L.I.S.T. ...That's how!. Maoism is a glorified managerial system akin to corporatism where the profits go to a ruling elite (sound familiar) at the expenditure of the masse's energies.

I get that, but authoritarianism is first and foremost a relationship. The authoritarian is a form of sociopath, as they'll prioritize their own imperatives and don't care about the realities of others, and that translates as a lack of empathy, flexibility, sense of humor, etc. But they aren't be successful at that when people around are more individualistic, rude, self-assertive and self-owned; i.e. less docile, courteous and submissive to self-entitled assholes.
One thing I noticed in an authoritarian relationship, is how the despot is being listened to by some of the entourage. You can't break free from authority if you give it a platform.

lumpy (not verified) Sat, 11/16/2024 - 21:27
In reply to I get that, but by anon (not verified)
the thesis of all this psyche stuff would suggest that authoritarians exist completely independently from ideology, using it as a convenient set of rationalizations. the relationship is an abusive one, which you can scale up to a whole cult and beyond
of course there's a stronger correlation around certain ideologies ... and maoism would score medium tending towards low, being one of the least relevant ideologies these days, having relatively little power, except in the minds of hucksters like jordan peterson
if maoism were to make a comeback, that would also be caused by the parasite capitalist classes and their seemingly infinite laziness and greed, squeezing their exploited underclasses to the point where the knives come out. i will smile and wave bye bye, should that occur!
but it's very unlikely, outside of the fever dreams of reactionaries where they equate "maoism" with all of critical analysis and all other such jackass nonsense

There was an entire craze of that ideology along with Marcuseanism in the 1970s. While that craze is gone and no longer in vogue, it absolutely has had an after effect that is still seen within certain power centres within academia and activist spaces that persists through language.
I'm not surprised that a dotard like you doesn't see this but this is absolutely a thing and anarchists should be fighting against it. Even if many people in these power areas don't call themselves maoists or are adherents to Marcusean power praxis you are still seeing the legacy of these 2 ideological creatures. Something had to succeed Stalinism among the left wing professional class to close out the 20th century and it was mostly maoism and marcusean praxis in academic and activist spaces that did this and it has not gone away.

if ziggles is a real person, he's a reactionary who wants you to confuse "maoism" with garden variety liberal progressives, for all the same old boring reasons that the far right misrepresents their opposition in the general population. none of this is very important to real anarchists, with whom, ziggy shares almost nothing in common. whether he believes his own crap or not, also doesn't matter.
the thing he's completely mischaracterizing is actually just the simple and obvious failings of capitalism, in the latter stages of decay and the portions of the liberal establishment who can't help but notice and study it, at least a little. it's hard to ignore when the building is burning down around your ears

For one thing I'm not formally using the term maoism to describe various libprog ideas. What I'm saying is that there have been problematic legacy effects of both maoist and marcusean ideology that have continued on into garden variety libprog language. Most people are not formally ideologues of those 2 figures but those 2 figures had a HUGE affect on the post-stalinist radical language of the 1970s and there are still aftereffects that are felt in radical and radical adjacent spaces to this day.
It's a fact for instance that Marxism had a much bigger moulding role on 20th century radicalism then anarchism did. Anarchism recovered(after its inner wars collapse) for the latter quarter of the 20th century but by that point it was stalinist and post-stalinist marxists that had the bigger influence(mao and marcuse being the big ones)
I understand the failings of capitalism just fine thank you. I'm a civilization critic for fux sake. Obviously I go farther then the anticaps. The problem with the anticaps is that many of them suck because of their direct or indirect marxist configurations and many of them are not anti-statists to go along with being anti-capitalists. The legacy effects of Maoism, which of course started with that red book retardation which infatuated many a young boomer radical in the 70s, is part of why these criticisms of capitalism are incomplete at best and at worst represent an even worse system of rule then we have right now.

You're just continuing to display your full intellectual retardation and a complete lack of understanding of terms. When I critique Marxism I'm critiquing it as an ideological STRUCTURE, not a culture you dumb fucking dotard. I'm coming from a counter structural anarchist/anarch perspective. How the fuck do you rope my analysis into 'it's the jews'? Jesus fucking christ you never let me down with your on going incoherence.
There's nothing remotely conspiratorial in my writing. It's basic ideological analysis. In regards to the jews if anything I like the things that they are stereotyped to be for. Whether it's cultural insularity, supposedly degrading 'the west' or christianity or undermining racist/racialist ideology, non of these things even remotely stick to me. I suspect your problem with me is that you're a marxoid yourself so my post-left Stirnerian analysis hits to close to home. Again you just don't understand basic terms. There are many ways to go after the structure of an ideology. In regards to Marcuse there are many ways you can go after him without being remotely related to pro-west reactionary ideology. Are you really so fffucking stupid that you don't know this.
For instance, Herbert actually has some values that I like. Like him I want to see the return of eros, and there are things in One Dimensional Man that are basically noncontroversial. His work for the US government is not really pertinent to my problems with him. My issue with him is his underlying Marxism even if it is destalinized. His repressive tolerance ideas are basically a modification of 'take power' marxism which I completely reject on anarchist/anarch grounds.
There are much better minds and ideas out there when it comes to a pro-eros disposition. Mixing the ideas of Stirner and Fourier(as done by the likes of Bob Black and Wolfi Landstreicher) is one of the ways to do it. The things that western reactionary loyalists are against I am for(pro homo, pro-queer etc). I love the Berlinian 'decadence'(the dumb christian term not Nietzschean) of The Wiemar republic as well as San Francisco at it's best. Anon 14:43 here, umm, well, thinking of overcrowded mice in cages, there are predominantly environmental conditions mixed with emotional experience which produce the psychological type. Empathy is not a genetic trait per se, a certain degree of habitat conditioning may teach people its win/win probability. There is the innate sharing reflex we have as children which could be nurtured and developed more in a non-cutthroat non-competitive environment which doesn't have any ideological political management framework.

"Are some components of maoist thought not useful for combating McCarthyism?" No, none at all. By going Maoist many groups in the US have given the FBI and that world-class bullshitting creep James Jesus Angleton a convenient pretext for repressing tendencies that challenged their White supremacy, as per the Soviet/Maoist invasion scare.

I'm anarchist and not because I self-proclaim as such but for the reasons why I do (like sheer disgust toward national fascism, rejection of single issues and fake-ass authoritarian agendas, etc)... Not only I was dubious about giving support to this over-specific ethno-national struggle but the stuff this movement stands for (like the mindless support to the "fallen heroes" of Hezbollah. Hamas and Samidoun) is highly objectionable and self-defeating from an anarchist perspective, and surprisingly similar to those "anarchists" that kept promoting the anarchist agency on the Ukrainian side of the war with Russia.
Your support to non-anarchist organizations and their agendas is nauseating, coming from an outlet that at least used to be legit anarchistic. I suggest you at least change your outlet's name, or at least quit posting your drivel in here as this is an anarchist site.

is your nausea affecting your reading comprehension? i've been dismayed to see some anarchists taking leave of their senses about all this stuff too but if you actually read this entire piece, it's pretty cautious about uncritically supporting anything
the framing is "sharing combative spaces" or something like that. that means they're NOT doing what you're saying they're doing so ... yeah, wtf? read it again if you need to

No, but their milquetoast "criticism" of UoF as shown above failed to address the blatant encouragement of authoritarian and ultra-conservative Islamist and natioanalist movements that make Steve Bannon look like some fluffy liberal hippie in comparison.
UoF is a DOA organization/movement from an anarchist POV... it's just complete syncretinism to be even considering a kind of "critical support" or "sharing combative spaces" (i.e. yet another Big Tent), which would mean a physical Venn Diagram with authoritarians.
This is even worse than the last century of sharing a Big Tent with the authoritarian & reformist Left..Thaf compares to being under a big tent in Euromaidan with Pravy Sektor and other Neonazis.

i don't disagree with most of that but setting your anarchist sanctimony aside for a second ... the reality in the streets is a reflection of huge numbers of new people getting understandably activated by the genocide of our times, happening before their eyes on tiktok or whatever
so ... there's a very different interpretation of what you're talking about where somebody could be standing in those streets, talking about it as a reality, without necessarily endorsing entire political worldviews or whole movements or whatever. some anarchists (like me) think we should be navigating these terrains sometimes, instead of flipping over the table and going home at the first sign of contradiction, tension or even our enemies in the same street.
that's more what I see in this writing and apparently we don't agree! which is fine.

samidoun is literally a prisoner support organization. American liberalism, with which you do not seem to mind sharing common cause, has been far more destructive to humanity than Islamism or even Nazism.

Just two days after this article war published, unity of fields took to Twitter to rant and straw man all of their anarchist associates, drawing from Stalinist tropes about insurrectional anarchism, as well as the pathologically misleading article written by a West coast blogger "no war but class war". In their social media hysterics, they carelessly accuse anarchists of being imperialists (lol) and white nationalists. Everyone who disagrees with them they attack, seeking to make a name for themselves more than to actually change minds. In this sense, they reported to liberal squabbling and sectarianism. Sad.

Palestine Action has achieved actual results, instead of immediately ghettoizing yourself into the corner of insurrectionary-anarchism I suggest you take a step back, examine the campaigns we have had in the UK and understand what made them successful. That is if success if what is being seeked here? Or is it merely posturing?

With their unbounded sectarianism and divisiveness, it is truly a security issue to work with them. Like many before them, they are willing toe desperate to denounce old allies online, to spread cynicism and hostility at key moments, and to wreck or split any group they are working with. Although there are sadly plenty of examples from within anarchism in the last few years of this behavior, it truly is a Hallmark of the Maoist philosophy that most of unity of fields explicitly endorses.
