Whether actions speak for themselves is a well discussed topic for anarchists. In the case of Saturday's assassination attempt, many questions remain. Fools, fearing silence, speak up to provide answers in the form of voter records, clothing, financial transactions, and browser history. More Positive Evidence is to come.
One thing is certain: a new popular enemy was born. Near universal condemnation of the act—familiar territory for anarchists throughout history—is the latest play for either political unity or rupture (depending on your news feed). And while assassination politics have grown more bizarre than the Russian nihilists could have ever imagined, the damned thing remains relevant for those violently opposed to the state.
My enemy's newest enemy is not my friend, however. And anarchists are shit at picking sides, anyhow.
Do you have a new enemy or friend in all of this, or just another spectacle to consume until it fades away? Is this a watershed moment through which His-story is written (no doubt as a Facebook post, first)? If so, how are anarchists against it on our own terms? Do you think there's anarchy to be found somewhere within electoral chaos, or does this latest buzz only add to the incoherent, deafening noise?

The trump assassination must have been feeling miserable in the planning phases, or possibly some stooge was duped into carrying it out (highly unlikely, but possible considering lack of evidence)
No i don't have a friend in this: my my enemy is clearly whoever thinks i should fallow some jackass like the assassins example. And yes. Cults and cult leaders exist.

anon (not verified) Mon, 07/15/2024 - 11:57
Any assassination attempt, whether successful or not, against Trump, at this juncture, would make him a martyr to the cumulative reactionary forces on the right. The fact that Trump survived, and likely will become the next President, does not bode well with him at the helm targeting his political enemies. And the aforementioned reactionary forces will unleash a shitstorm as a result of this. I believe that if there was an opportune time to put Trump in the ground, it was a decade ago. That being said, if you're going to go through with making an attempt on the life of Trump, it's gotta succeed. Failure is worse than a successful attempt in this scenario, but either way it won't lead to anything positive in the US, especially for anarchists or the Left broadly speaking.
With all that being said, on an emotional level, I was pretty stoked that this happened. Seeing Trump blown away on live TV would have been crazy. It's not like he's not deserving of some lead.

That either way their would have been bloodshed (if the assassination achieved its objective or not), but in the U.S., there now will be undoutedly be more that it failed.
I don't think it will all be started by "reactionary forces". Also, ironically the biden administration was bloodier for people not located in the U.S. as a part of his stretegies militarily, but trump is not better because his focus is always internal warfare.
I don't think there will be a civil war, just variations on the fa/anti-fa stuff that occurred over the trump afministration.

The fact it's now known the assassin was a typical CHUD is only helping his Left and anarchist political enemies, not making it worse for them. This might divide the Right and conservatives more than anything.
Political assassination of course can't be thought like it was +100 years back. I repeat... THIS IS NOT EARLY 20TH CENTURY MUHRICA. Some insurgents might have more success offing some lower-key figure, or more local despot. But a POTUS or Presidential candidate? Not quite.

You seem to have forgotten about the fact that trump's camp constantly lies about things and lives in a delusional fantasy world, it will probably divide the republican parties in some ways, but it will certainly help trump in the sense that many of his positions are based on martyrdom and persecution.
There's also the possibility that this assassination attempt won't have much of an effect on american culture in general: assassination attempts are actually pretty common on american presidents, look at the wikipedia page: 4 of them have even died as a result, and people have at least tried to kill 17 of them. For some reason, the mods erased a thread i tried to post on this topic in the forum, even though i wasn't advocating anything, or saying anything purposefully upsetting and trollish. In situations where someone's running as a wannabe dictator figure, I wonder if assassinations have more effect. It seems to me the establishment could easily have replaced Obama, Clinton, Bush, etc. with someone very similar. But Trump couldn't easily be replaced. If he died, the Republicans would run with an Establishment candidate who'd have less popular following and less danger of becoming a dictator.
I'm not sure whether Trump's death would have rallied support to whatever was left of his side. His supporters might riot in the aftermath, but they're left without a figurehead. The killing of Pim Fortuyn took the wind out of the Dutch far-right for awhile, but only until another populist figurehead was found (Wilders). On the other hand, if candidates from a certain faction constantly get assassinated, the faction is likely to take up arms (e.g. the left in Colombia).

The Answer Havers are certainly not my friends over these past 24 hours. Everything that "either" "side" has to say seems eerily like sabre rattling and only one "side" is willing to actually swing their sword. While my gut feeling here (read: no supporting evidence) is that the lad pictured would have rather shot up his school but got so giddy about it that he just couldn't wait for classes to resume in fall, I don't think that means there's absolutely no celebration to be had. The state has inched closer to declaring war on itself and I will gladly provide picnic blankets for everyone who would like to join me on the hill above the battle for a nice lunch.
In a series of flips that would make Simone Biles green with envy, the It's Going Down crowd is having a full blown Big Think and comparing this to Timothy McVeigh. Their rush to distance themselves from anything that could be considered effective on a global stage (a stage they pine to play on, by their own enthusiastic admission) is more telling of their cowardice than anything else. They are incapable of simply not defending the shooter, they must manufacture a direct link to nazi sympathy and mass casualties in the name of The Turner Diaries. They can't only not be in favor, they must be harshly opposed. To do anything less would be scary because to do anything less would mean their carefully cultivated audience of rage-clickers may stop generating revenue. Alt-f4 the cops in our heads.
Friend-enemy is fun and all, but really... When are we going to learn we don't have to vote? Assassinations of heads of state, attempted or successful, shouldn't be something that we (big weight bearing down on this "we") rush to do anything about whatsoever. It doesn't matter if it was a Democrat or Republican or the CIA or the SDS or a human sized swastika with googly eyes and pipe cleaner arms and legs. We can simply not side with the state or its sponsors.
If anarchists must say what only anarchists can say, then given how everyone else can't shut the fuck up about it I think it's about time we said nothing. We're apparently the only ones who can.

Trump is a guy that carries on business as usual while sparring with the media and not apologizing for his shit talking. He's like candidates and presidents of old (60-70+ years ago) that were less polite. The media/tabloids of course feeds the Giga-Chad Troll and game show host that's been out to promote himself since the mid 80s because he's good for business and revenue.. This has bled over onto other areas that will also focus on his nonsense feeding the Giga-Chad Troll's belly. It's all just a giant spectacle that must carry on. Assassinations or attempts to assassinate a US president hasn't done much since 1865. Business carried on, but the replacement was very sympathetic to the South.
Either way it doesn't matter to me. It doesn't effect (or affect?) me at all except for a small amount of lolz. I don't care that much as I don't follow US politics much. I didn't even know there were president debates until the other day. I don't partake in it. So according to you, "chud" just means the same as "neo-Nazi"?
"Chud is a slang term used online to refer to people who are considered far from socially normal and unpleasant to be around."
"On February 28th, 2003, the Urban Dictionary definition for chud was officially created by the user Suzi-G,[2] stating that a chud is "stupid and ugly and probably lives in a trailer park beside the dumpster," (Know your Meme)
"A unattractive person whose defining characteristic of their personality is their egotism." (current top definition on Urban Dictionary, except the film one).
It's pretty obvious that it's a slur referring to class, nonconformist lifestyle, and psychological disability, and that it doesn't specifically refer to neo-Nazis at all.

The armed gangs in Catalonia had a demonstrably opposite impact. Putting the upper class in fear absolutely worked.
I also think the early 1900s is kind of an impossible comparison to 2024. If an anarchist did it we could actually test the theory. My guess? The anarchist movement would be repressed sure but it would grow and turn out stronger.
There's also this question whether armed struggle just kind of happens when anarchy gets popular. You can see what happened in Greece post 2007. Armed urban groups, constant police battles, countless low level attacks and illegalism towards pretty much everything.
It might not be a choice and more of a chicken egg.

Sad to say though it's hard to get this and you'll never get that well rounded opinion unless you are there and meet different people.
Most Americans will go there and meet the same select group of people and come away thinking they are all there is in the way of greek opinion. Don't get me wrong some of those people are awesome but they aren't gonna give you anything other than a boilerplate response for complicated issues. There's also some big differences in the way the Greek movements politics differ from the states.

That's because a head no longer matters; the FIGURE does. We've gone past the materialist age and live in the realm of capitalist metaphysics, where you can create value of even less than thin air, as all you need is an image.

If there’s one thing both Epstein and Crooks signify and which is anarchic, it’s the accumulation of mass contempt for the elites and for their democracy which only offers us a choice between two pathetic and unpopular candidates to cope with a crumbling empire and spiraling economy.

My takeaway from this event is the old adage of we keep us safe. The common people at the event were well aware of the danger posed and raised concerns. This event highlighted the failure of our police state to do their 'job' and that should be the talk of the town.

most of the peanut gallery can't even wrap their minds around simple facts like how the most "professional" security perimeters can fail easily and the cops and secret service are just humans who can hesitate for a few minutes because reasons.
not evidence of much except their own fallibility and how quickly some random kid with an AR can wreck your day

Rejecting liberal reconciliation
Comment, Jul 17th
After the Trump shooting, outright denunciations of political violence only ignore the political order’s violent foundations
After the assassination attempt of former (and likely future) president of the US Donald Trump, we have seen a shift to the supposedly moderate centre ground by liberals and nominally democratic socialists in Western political discourse. Senators for the US Democrats, cabinet members of the Parliamentary Labour Party, and high profile left-wing journalists/activists have all come out to condemn not just this act of political violence, but political violence in its totality. This is a piece of hypocrisy which helps, in turn, to obscure the historical truth about the conduct of Western nation states. The violence of the American imperialist project, the violence of the European ones which are its forebears, and even the violence of the 19 mass-murderers active this year in Pennsylvania alone, seem to hold much less pertinence for neo-liberal and ostensibly leftist figures than the grazed ear of a neo-fascist presidential candidate.
Targeted assassination has a long history in the United States, largely due to the lacklustre restrictions on, and profound cultural influence of, firearms amongst the American citizenry, and the simultaneous repression of organized collective resistance in the country. Whether it’s the assassination of presidential figures, high-profile governors or activists, the lone gunman (a problematically romanticized image in American life) is nonetheless a prominent and frequently occurring one. When this political phenomenon occurs, it is almost unanimously condemned by members of the political classes, yet when it is, the ensuing discourse is oddly flavoured. The curious phrase often touted by these figures in the sociopolitical centre is that “violence has no place in politics”. But this is far from an accurate description of any public sphere that has ever existed. Violence in one form or another is dominant dominating place in every aspect of political life; the pretence that it holds none is either a lie motivated by thinly-veiled malice, or a blunder with incalculable consequences.
Political power, as it is understood by most theorists and researchers, is defined as the ability or capacity to get someone to do something they wouldn’t do otherwise. This capacity is, in the case of the State, always underwritten by violence. It means violence in daily life, violence in moments of catastrophe, violence in moments of triumph. Political power translates into violence in every political act aside from those incidents of persuasion, which, in the harsh daylight of political life, make up only a tiny portion of true power in our society.
So, how does this blatant hypocrisy show itself in the discourse surrounding the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania? Despite their support of an ideology that sees violence committed on a cataclysmic scale globally, liberals and conservatives merge to a condemnation of this particular kind of violence, in this particular space. They regard the genocides, massacres, and assassinations funded by their money and committed by their soldiers on foreign soil to be a mere “foreign” or “foreigner” problem. They minimise and trivialise that neocolonial violence in the Global South, whilst this incident is an egregious stain on the Euro-American democratic tradition.

The main thing I took from
anon (not verified) Wed, 07/17/2024 - 15:12
The main thing I took from the coverage of this attempt is the extent of the bubble within which political leaders are kept. Apparently presidents, ex-presidents, other leading figures are not allowed out in public without – not just a team of bodyguards – but a team of snipers. Rooftops are checked and cleared ahead of events such as rallies. Crowds are vetted to the point of banning umbrellas. Old-fashioned assassinations are almost impossible. Except when the assassins get their hands on rockets, artillery, etc. Or infiltrate the security team. Korean dictator Park was killed by his own armed guard.
But it’s occurred to me: the security team has effective control of what powerful politicians see and do, which of “the public” they ever see or meet. The politician lives in a constant securitised, militarised space – to the extent that ordinary civilian life becomes alien to them. Their gaze is corrupted by the security bubble which always surrounds them. And if a politician from outside the mainstream comes to prominence, they are rapidly drawn into the bubble – and the ideological influence it exerts.
The people in charge of security will give politicians – who may be new to the issue – a misleading impression of competence and expertise. The elected politicians will defer to what the security chiefs say is necessary. Which will usually be, what serves the power of the security sector.
The security “experts” no doubt push a narrative to the politicians which gives them the impression they are constantly about to be assassinated, that anyone who’s in disagreement with them, who protests, who’s different from the norm, who breaks the law or won’t submit to cops or security, is an imminent lethal threat. They are given the impression of being in a safe but fragile bubble. Politicians who feel dependent on these security “experts” will become increasingly prepared to do what they want. And they will be more and more separated from whatever public they claim to represent.
At the same time, they don’t care much about antagonising people, because they believe they will be kept safe. And, because the audience is selected and censored, they will come to believe the public adores them, and that everyone in the world is the kind of sycophant who submits to indignities just to see them speak.
There is even an implied threat: if you don’t do what the security sector wants, we can kill you, or let you be killed, at any time.
So, rather than a hierarchy politicians > cops/security > public (or in democratic ideology, public > politicians > cops/security > public), we now have a hierarchy which goes: cops/security > politicians > cops/security > public. No wonder it feels so totalitarian.
Jeez he's got the same looks
I AM JUST SICK… (not verified) Thu, 07/18/2024 - 00:06
Jeez he's got the same looks and eyes as John Malkowitz in "In the Line of Fire" but the assassin he plays is real smart and almost scores, but Clint Eastwood,,,,
I thought the media would have swooped on the sniper who got the first shot in, I can see a book and movie out of this, maybe Trump if he wins presidency will promote him? How crass,,,,,,,

Some new context; the kid apparently fell into a deep depressive state and just wanted to go out big. He was searching for the locations of any of the presidential candidates. Didn't matter which one.
Feds releases the info today.
Condolences to the antifascist researchers who were wrong, again.

the point may be that we know nothing regardless (unless,as you say, one knows "the dude"), so we could usefully stop acting like we know things based on bullshit from cops, etc.
sometimes spelling things out is helpful. (how to use concern trolling to our benefit...)

We are intelligent beings with the power of inference and reason. You both need to understand that we indeed can know something given a enough data and using our intelligence to suss out the truth. We also have the ability to be wrong and correct out course.
SCIENCE!

I agree, but the point is also that the people who jumped to an illogical reason did so for clearly ideological purpose. I also think those ideological reasons are extremely telling regarding who we keep in close proximity to anarchy.

Frankly what just happened is the first thing to make me think assassinations are worthy after all. I always thought what everybody thinks, "they were effective in the 1800s when you still had monarchs with actual power; they're ridiculous now that even the most powerful people are just white collars doing what anybody else would do in their position, and to replace wouldn't literally change a thing". But given the hardships of all parties in finding a candidate that could actually win, in the U.S. and throughout the world, I'm starting to think these kind of actions could actually be significant again. Sure now our Nº1 ENEMY cannot be considered any politician cause we got a lot worse in front of us. But we all know that after Trump we'll have Musk, or Zuckerberg, or the equivalent in 2028. Would our world be completely different without Elon Musk? Probably not. Without him now, would we still have Tesla, Starlink, and Snailbrook? I don't think so either.
