From It's Going Down

10 years ago a group of people set out to create a new media platform to document and give voice to autonomous social movements happening across so-called North America. It’s Going Down (IGD) has had an impact and audience beyond what many of us thought was possible, and we’re proud of the work that we’ve done over the past ten years.

In the last year however, we’ve come up against the wall of decreasing capacity to continue running this project on a consistent basis. With the coming to power of another Trump administration, we think its important for us to announce that we are taking a hiatus from working on this platform, with the hopes that other projects can find their footing.

A lot has changed since this project started: anarchist and autonomous anti-capitalist voices are louder and more common, as is the push back from elites against them. Both corporate parties are looking to silence and attack those speaking out against the growing push towards authoritarianism, war, inequality, and ecological destruction. We need vibrant media platforms that can speak to the lived realities and conditions of working-class people while also covering grassroots rank-n-file movements from below.

We know that It’s Going Down has been a project that a lot of people have utilized as a resource over the years and we want to encourage participants in social struggles to develop media infrastructure in the coming period. Think about what you can do, who you can connect with, and how you can get your reporting out into the world.

Going forward, we do have several podcasts that we intend to get out into the world in the next few weeks, and we encourage people to check out a new collaborative podcast project, The Beautiful Idea. Our social media accounts on BlueSky and Mastodon will continue to share and post news, upcoming events, and boost other projects. Our columns In Contempt and This Week in Fascism will also now be appearing on CrimethInc. starting in 2025. Finally, we will be keeping IGD online as an archive to ensure that this information is open, available, and able to be sourced for research, future learning, and ongoing projects.

This is far from the end for us, and what is coming next is still forming, but incredibly exciting. In the mean time, here are some projects that we encourage you to check out:

In a world of influencers, grifters, and algorithms, we hope that we a created space for an alternative and built a platform for movements and struggles that challenge domination and exploitation.

The old Indymedia slogan rings as true today as it ever did: make media, make trouble!

Anews being jilted that they didn't get a mention despite constantly shitting on IGD with snide remarks in tags and image captions. Truly a "I don't think about you at all" moment.

How about some intelligent critical, clearly worded criticism of what people feel were the strengths and weaknesses of this effort?

anon (not verified) Sat, 12/21/2024 - 03:47

It's Getting Delusional calls it quits before It Got Deleted. But really they just merged with Groupthinc.

anon (not verified) Sat, 12/21/2024 - 05:00

I'm concerned that IGD as a project is ending more or less where they started, appealing to left liberals &;uncritically redirecting people to white-domonated anglo anarchist "institutions." It would be nice for one of the upcoming reflection pieces to contradict this, but where's the (collective) self criticism about their scene being not much differently positioned than it was the last time Trump was becoming president? Is someone going to talk about their lack of interest in the Caribbean region, or any of the various public controversies & criticisms involving them originating from other anarchists? Or are they wanting to be another Crimethinc, where criticism & pressure to change course is disloyalty to The Cause? The "some of us are hopping on a podcast now" announcement isn't encouraging wrt these questions.

For example, their podcast, website, & author recommendations feel like they could be mostly unchanged from 8 years ago. Are they convinced that the usual suspects—mostly white u.s.ians—remain the best representatives of anarchist politics? Why else would they literally recommend billionaire-funded liberal media like The Intercept over new efforts, some of which they've promoted on the site themselves?

is the carribbean a part of north america technically? i feel like there was lots of engagement on haiti, but youre right it would have been cool to have more. IGD def could have done better on many things. it is still good that it existed. and good that it worked hard to communicated subversive ideas to lots of people, since the insurrection is a mass armed uprising, not some urbanites gluing locks and breaking windows alone at night. in any case, would be nice to see future anarchist projects more engaged in cultivating dialogue around strategy and not just activism. but that is mostly a problem for the anarchist movement to solve, not a media collective.

"Technically" implies an objective, depoliticized answer, which I don't think there really is with geographical boundaries. But I think that IGD didn't have to answer the question either way (no mention of it in the geographical breakdown, no pressure from readers asking why they didn't discuss it more) is itself telling about the environment they operated in.

While I agree that petty vandalism isn't necessarily the Most Important Thing they didn't publish, I still think their choice to stay quiet about the kind of reportbacks typical on other counterinfo sites should've been further explained. Did they come under explicit legal pressure? Did they just feel like it wasn't worth their time? Did others disagree (for example, Night Owls moving off the website)?

Generally speaking, I have seen other anarchist web projects leave closing statements that directly & critically addressed critical aspects of the anarchist "movement"/media space & their own role in it (https://anarchistnews.org/content/we-close-door-publicaci%C3%B3n-refrac…). This isn't one of them, though I would like to believe such an assessment is on its way. We'll see.

i was just responding to the apparent FEAR of the folks at IGD in relation to trump. I clearly stated that I strongly dislike Donald Trump, but whenever I start wondering whether I should live my life any differently because of his election win, I can't come up with any solutions because none of the political parties will impact my ability to do the things I need to do to survive, or at least not in predictable and clear ways. It's not like i'm trying to immigrate anywhere, and both parties have failed to improve the medical system time and time again. You could argue Obama improved it, but reducing the cost of getting treatment isn't terribly meaningful from an anarchist perspective.

It's not surprising that IGD didn't mention ANews, nor have they pretty much ever - along with CrimethInc.

In the above announcement, Shane Burley is mentioned as a recommended author. Here is a direct quote from Burley's social media where they were having a conversation with Kevin Tucker:

"I think we can all agree that Atassa should go in the dumpster, Aragorn is a fascist creep, and we can drop LBC into the sea."
- Shane Burley

While Burley has already denied the relationship, it sounds like they are recommending that the former anarchist publisher LBC (Little Black Cart) be helicopter dropped into the ocean like the governments across Latin America have done to anarchists previously. Burley is the kind of "anarchist" where if you're not part of their brand, they have no problem recommending your death.

they're just giving anarchists a way to bypass all the intimidating "publisher" bullshit. I personally don't like having other people do any part of the book-making process for me, because actually making books is fun. It might be even better than little black cart:

https://opendistro.net/

You superiority and victory obsessed anarchists are nothing. Do you know how to fearlessly click on links? You might actually learn something if you did! They even have a forum to discuss printing methods, so in my opinion, they killed their old Aragornian! and insurrectionary-left based brain child and are doing something beyond wailing painfully about colonialism/capitalism. RAH RAH RAH!

I just hope that this project is better than Lulu press, they kinda rip you off, and they have patronizing rules about what you can put in books (i admitted my book had violent and dark references in it to see what happens, and for that reason, they blocked my book from showing up on the website to "protect the kids", fucking losers. There aren't even any references to the christian god in my book, and there are no stories about fucking your drunk dad to continue the bloodline like there are in the bible!)

This is what happens when we deplatform and ostracize brave, interesting anarchs over Internet rumors — the Shane Burleys, Margaret Killjoys, and Cindy Milstiens take over. 99/100 people referring to themselves as anarchists today are also liberals and globalists. You may recall anarchists starting and leading the 21st century antiglobalist movement.

I even felt sorry for that CEO's kids (but obviously not anyone who was crying in the news about it). I probably felt more of a sense of joy about Matthew Crooks though, because he proved to the world that you don't have to be a card-carrying democrat to hate the clown man. I was hoping the imaginary Nintendo plumber wouldn't get caught, but my thought was "meh, this isn't going to have any effect on how much i hate doctors".

In fact, Matthew Crooks is a truly-american story of bravery: the rifle school told him he sucked, but he still tried to kill an ex-president anyways. Unbelievable! And he got his reward, he's not going to have to sit around and think about what he did like all of the rest of us hateful bastards....well, my parents were married, but you get what i'm sayin' dawg...

CalvinSmith (not verified) Sun, 12/22/2024 - 08:26

In reply to by CalvinSmith (not verified)

should clarify this silly troll post I made: Luigi and Crooks are very similar kinds of "terrorists", "rebels", or "activists" in my eyes:

-they both were fairly young people clearly dissatisfied with their lives

-they both carried out very lucid acts of violence against "powerful" people

-their actions were both praised, and if Crooks had killed Trump, he would have gotten a lot more praise than Luigi did...

Differences:

-Luigi's attack was both more complex and successful: he exploited a vulnerability in shareholder meetings (i wonder how these will change as a result..._), built his own gun, successfully killed someone, and successfully escaped without being shot. He also did not execute his attack as a nihilist, but had a very well thought out ideological premise for his action.

Need i say more? Crooks was more of a nihilist, and according to the internet, he was also looking to take out biden.

You failed at two things here, Calvin Troll:

First off, Mangione is still a suspect. And the evidence that led to the cops arresting him was suspicious.

"-they both were fairly young people clearly dissatisfied with their lives"

If there's anything surprising with Mangione being the assassin -if he was-is that he's your typical wealthy Ivy League cool kid, so much it's farcical to have such a dude going full UNA Bomber. So if some gross structure planted in his spine is what caused him a breakdown, that makes sense... but to the point of killing a CEO? I dunno.

The tacit implication that people with disabilities or chronic pain are more justified in these kinds of actions, and illicit more sympathy, is one of the most interesting angles of this story.

CalvinSmith (not verified) Sat, 12/28/2024 - 08:02

In reply to by anon (not verified)

the court of public opinion already convicted mangione. His innocence really doesn't look promising IMO, yet someone can always bring forth new evidence and suspects. People can do amazing things themselves, and to me, this ranks pretty high in terms of what a lone wolf assassin can do.

Plus, his backstory for doing this makes sense to me, so i can't save him if he's getting railroaded. That scenario, however, would be utterly unsurprising, and the police only railroad people as their job demands.

not seem to be in a lucid enough of frame-of-mind to get his hands on a grenade! Ok on further extrospection I think you've described the complex value/ideological mentality of the shooters, and I think this is uniquely a Western personality type, Western in so far as the capitalist/consumerist society excludes young unemployed males who thus cannot maintain a competitive status amongst their peers, succumb to the materialistic depression which isolates them from the sexual physiological/psychological harmony that all humans yearn for. (Nope, not woke, just a realist). With youth, this condition festers and seethes and eventually explodes in testosterone fuelled demonstrations of violence including terminal selfharm. The muslim suicide bombers are also a variation of this socio-biological phenomena. Ever studied overcrowded rats in a cage, this happens with or without ideological/religious input. Have a good New Year.

anon (not verified) Mon, 12/23/2024 - 01:17

Just posted from IGD's Mastodon:

Thanks to everyone's kind words. We do appreciate it.

A reminder: we are not dying, fading into the dark night, or doing a full-stop on media work.

We will continue to run this account and work on a variety of media projects, however at the current moment, we aren't able to do IGD as a web based platform and podcast at the same rate as we have in the past, and we feel like we owe it to folks to give you all a heads up about that.

The media landscape for autonomous anti-capitalist and anti-colonial projects has really shifted in the last few years, with people doing less 'report-back' style journalism and more just posting onto social media.

This reality requires people willing to slog through the swamp so to speak to bring the rest of us a report on what's going on and also reaching out to organizers on the front-lines for interviews, etc. We feel like IGD helped do this well, but it is very time consuming. We also feel the shift from reporting and having space for movement dialog and talking about social struggles and critiquing our lived realities has been replaced with more 'reaction' style content generation - which is a mixed bag.

There's also been a drop off in people from autonomous movements attempting to have a wider conversation with the rest of society - but if recent events are any indication, people are angry and fed up. If we don't speak to them, someone else will.

As people that both make and consume a lot of media, let's think about how to fill these voids.

Let all that “communities!” “neighbors!” “abolitionist!” bullshit find its grave alongside the very American poison of trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Kind of a bad look not to reference ongoing media projects on the continent in their final send off, but after MANY years of just not publishing and on at least one occasion editing anonymous submissions they didn't like (or feared legal consequences of) publishing, they do now have a list of counter-info sites in their contact page.

The word from some anarcho-friendly peeps on the Biden / Kamala team is that the incoming Trump admin have greenlighted a black ops hit squad to take out anybody who has anything to do with the IGD website. The situation was considered extremely serious to the point that representatives of a DEM-friendly faction of the FBI visited the more prominent members of IGD and advised them to publicly announce that IGD was going on hiatus in the hope that once Team Trump heard the news that the hit would be put on the back-burner for a while. Understandably everybody at IGD are pretty freaked out but are putting on a brave public face as they don't want the nationwide movement fracturing and scattering in fear before the battle to depose Trump even begins. All IGD staff have now been given new identities along with corresponding identification and have been relocated to safe-houses in DEM-friendly US states whilst the more prominent staff members have been relocated to either Canada or Australia. Some DEM-Allied Black Ops veterans who assisted members of the Weather Underground Organization back in the day have come out of retirement to help coordinate what is looking to be an IGD-led Anti-Trump Underground Resistance. Stay tuned for more updates soon boppers.
