Montreal Anarchist Tech Convergence: 2025 We're Back!

From Montreal Anarchist Tech Convergence

Technology is a steaming pile of whatever. The salad of transistors, capacitors, and wires that we marinate in for 17.2 minutes before we drink our coffee are the first thing we see each morning, while our subversions of the droppings of surveillance capitalism are the last things burning their images into our retinas before we close our eyes each night. The AI-augmented totality that numbs our senses and optimizes our labour lumbers on, vulnerable but unhindered. Let's not say we never tried.

The Montreal Anarchist Tech Convergence is a yearly gathering on the intersection of anarchism and technology.

*sighs* Where have all the anarchs gone, the ones that used to sit in the forest clearing with a tomahawk and knife and whittle away at a piece of wood that had fallen from a tree, not chain-sawed off, but discarded by the tree. Whittling away to make a spear to ward off the greedy invaders attempting to put walls and fences around a piece of land and then charge people to live on it, and enslave them into working in factories built adjacent so that they could live with surplus wealth and extravagance, whilst their workers struggled to survive and depleted all their energies making the landlord rich? Later, the landlord provided a token of appreciation with small rectangular screens with which provided some glimpse of the outside world, but also indoctrinated them into a subservient petty minded view of life.*sigh*

Sadly, since the overwhelming tech-blitzkrieg of the last 10 yrs, Primitivism and those with the deep knowledge of sustainability within finitely resourced environment have become depleted in numbers, ironically, below the critical sustainable number of people ( I think it's 30) to function in any environment which requires engagement, which now requires technology to be viable as a social force for change. So they are still out there, making spears abd stuff, growing vegetables etc, but keep to themselves.

Recently went to a convergence and the types that would have fully endorsed primitivism in the past spoke about it as a silly idea from the 1990's. I breathed a sigh of relief. If true believers in primmie junk want to keep to themselves, I say: let's keep it that way!

90s Primitivism morphed into a more logical non-obsessive prepper mindset + frugal diy anti-consumerist existence. It allows for a flexible and benevolent insurgency within the corporate/capitalist hegemony.
