"The Void" by Yves Klein (1958)

Silence is a wonderfully complex paradox. Its nothingness and everythingness has provoked cultures across generations to make sense of what it says when saying nothing. Pious priests and monastic monks meet its mystery with respective reverence and contemplation, while musicians of every flavor require it to punctuate rhythms and fill gaps in between notes. To the curious, silence may be an invitation toward what's unsayable and unknown. To the fearful, silence might be best avoided outright.

Silence is, in fact, golden, as the saying goes. Even the capitalists have figured this out, and they're happy to sell tickets to costly corporate retreats that spawn market innovation through the magic of silence. Under its heavy weight, silence can also serve as an aid in disciplinary practices, both against the impulses of the self as well as others. It fills the air in tense family dynamics, stuffy public school classrooms, and speaks volumes in the erased traditions of genocided cultures.

"Nobody writes books anymore" says the anarchist reader who likens literary silence to imaginative drought. Antifascist logic often opts out of silence for fear that competing fascist rhetoric might win out. Political slogans like "Silence = Death" and "White Silence is Violence" imbue what isn't said with a complicity for the current state of things. Anarchists like Zerzan mourn the loss of silence amidst the noise of modern life, while Tiqqun contrasts passive, resigned silence against the active, "strategic silence" of the antagonistic rebel in black.

How do you experience silence? When, if ever, is silence beneficial or harmful to anarchists? Does it offer an enticing elixer, as much of humanity suggests, or is silence to be negated alongside everything else?

(silence is an acceptable and encouraged response to these questions)

I don't think complete silence exists anywhere for us here on Earth. Freshly fallen flakes of snow accumulating may absorb sound in the night, but trees creaking, wind whistling, will still delight our ears. Vibrations are too plentiful to completely rid ourselves from them. Perhaps noise cancellers work. Deaf people experience the wonder of a negation of the sense, but to my understanding still desire the ability to partake, which speaks volumes. But deaf & headphones aside, even in the deepest of nights & snow, sound remains. Owls wings are quiet, but not without sound & the shrews & hares they hunt are themselves not completely silent.

I often find that remaining silent in conversations with friends a valuable skill. I say skill because my silence is intermittent, I ask them to expand on a topic & give them reassurance while I really listen to what they have to say. This isn't totally the same as active listening. This technique has taken me awhile to understand & practice & I'd still consider myself a novice. But listening while remaining silent myself has unearthed some rare, lucid, unguarded emotional & philosophical gems from loved ones, gems that, in the past, I would have used to stifle by dominating conversations by loving the sound of my own voice.

A quiet mouth won't get fed is an expression I heard in my activist days. It was said alongside power gives up nothing without a demand & silence=complicity. I've since moved far past this form of beggary. Altogether different is letting your enemy know that they shouldn't test you. Is there not something to the screams & roars of an animal letting you know not to cross its' path? The tiger's growl, the rattlesnakes croatlus.

I brought up John Cage as a jumping off point because he is someone I respect as an anarchist & mycologist. I can't say that I agree with much of his ideas following Eastern philosophy, but I certainly admire his contributions & his song felt important to add here. Hope some of what I wrote spurs thoughtful conversation

just shut the fuck up
why all these words hoping to spark "conversation" as if such a thing were possible? be quiet for once

I've had Tinnitus as long as I can remember, when I was a kid I thought that it was what silence 'sounds' like.
I guess it's better to never have known Silence then to have lost it or it might have made me very depressed.

Oh well, at least Tinnitus is better than having an hysterical voice like an ideologue inside your head telling you to do crazy things, and which alters your moods and emotions, like C,R,A,Z,Y,
I just have my serene anarch s,,,,s,,,,,,,s,,,,like being in the forest on a summer night listening to cicadas doing their mating call by rubbing their wings together. S,,,,,,,S,,,,,,,,S

BECAUSE OF TINNITUS MY EVERYDAY CONVERSATION IS SCREAMED OUT, EVEN WHEN WHISPERING. IT'S HELL FOR MY FRIENDS AND PEOPLE AT CINEMAS I'M ATTENDING. YES, SILENCE TRULY IS GOLDEN.

anon (not verified) Mon, 10/28/2024 - 21:15

so, it behooves us, from the start, to ask what did 'silence is golden' mean when it was first coined? how has this meaning evolved and why does the prompt assert strenuously that it is true? true in what way? just because capitalists can bottle it & sell it?

and, which silence is the prompt actually asking about? the silence of nature? or the silence of not speaking up for friends / self / political positions / etc.? or some other silence? the silence of silence = death is not the silence Zerzan rightfully mourns.

i mean, what is your actual question?

why do people insist on interrogating prompts like this?

it's a PROMPT. pick what is interesting to you and respond to THAT.

or just be passive recipients of someone else's thoughts and imagination, i guess? i hear that sometimes works too.

silly, i did respond to what was interesting.

btw, 'speech is silver, silence is golden' seems to come from the 9th century and is probably arabic in origin.

In the naked light I saw maybe ten thousand people (maybe more?) talking without speaking and hearing without listening and some people were writing songs that they never dared share as if they were disturbed by the sound of silence.

I said, "Fools! Y'all fucks do not know that Silence grows like a cancer? Hear my words so that I might teach you or take my arms so that I might reach you!" But I realize my words will probably just fall like silent raindrops and echo in the wells of silence.

So I whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said 'Fresh' and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cab was rare, but I thought "Nah, forget it, yo, Holmes, to Bel-Air!"

as i get older, my hearing is starting to slowly go. i wish it would hurry the fuck up so i can stop listening to the mass stupidity.

was doing the dishes thinking about this and i'd say that silence, or at least quiet, is a central part of my survival routine, and a useful part of the way i engage day to day with people i actually want to engage with. it doesnt feel "lost" or whatever to me at all, it is probably the single most operative part of the way i choose to be most of the time. occasionally i find times to talk a lot as i like to, usually im either listening or i'm refusing to engage with whatever the patter or noise is.

but tonight the theme in my household is another acquaintance we had hoped to reconnect with is dead. and i'm less mourning than thinking, the self-sufficiency i've chosen means a kind of silence between myself and too many people i wish i might have known who are now gone. and that doesnt seem to be in short supply at all. so i wonder, is the silence being gestured at here any less calculating as an end and myopic as a means than the activist thing apparently being critiqued? how many people has my "strategic silence," regardless of what i write online in spaces i feel fine spouting off in because everyone seems to agree are bullshit, prevented me from saying anything past pleasantries to? tonight, i feel ashamed. no doubt after a steady look or listen into nothing tonight or tomorrow i'll feel fine about it. as the prompt notes, there is a therapeutic quality to that kind of exercise

it is said, better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

on the other hand, a journey through the major arcana begins with the fool.

as Ursula K LeGuin's interpretation puts it:

The way you can go
isn't the real way.
The name you can say
isn't the real name.

But, as Katagiri says, You have to say something. If you don't speak, nobody will understand.

this is all about the Silence that is golden.

there is also the silence that is a toxic cesspool of resentment, anger, fear & loathing, and grasping.
as UKLG further interprets,

So, the unwanting soul
sees what's hidden,
and the ever-wanting soul
sees only what it wants.

there are the things about which we cannot speak. and there are the things about which we must speak.

the trick is to know which witch is which.

Sorry, silence contradicts my main interest in anarchism, which is using it to show off how radical and badass I am

I've never experienced silence. Silence can only occur in a perfect vacuum and a perfect vacuum would be nothingness, but a perfect vacuum doesn't exist anywhere. It's theoretically possible to exist. There is no paradox

I'm a revolutionary screamer in street protests, but at home I'm a pondering malcontent with severe tinnitus from having activist hacks screaming through mega-phones just inches FROM MY FUCKING HEAD!

I think of silence/noise as more than just the presence and absence of sounds and more of a metaphor for being in the present moment or caught in distraction/anxiety.

In the first few months of practicing silent meditation, I became aware of how my mind constantly chatters. Even though I was sitting silently, my mind couldn’t stop listing chores, scheduling responsibilities, and writing grocery lists. Until I stopped to listen, I had no idea how profoundly loud my mind actually is.

Then something incredible happened. After a lot more practice, I noticed that the chattering stopped and the real silence began. First, for only a few seconds at a time, and then for minutes, my mind was completely still and silent. Through the silence, I was able to access the most incredible sensation of connectedness with the unending physical world around me. It’s a feeling that I can only access by overcoming mental noise and offers a different way of experiencing being alive.

Yeah, I've found when I'm in silent mind state that I appearance that I have a -- Thousand yard stare --, but with contented calmness, not with the vacuum of mental exhaustion and burnout.
In a way it's good, people don't approach me, thus I maintain my bliss, and if anyone does disturb me, I burst into laughter and sway/dance.
Like I said, too much silence disconnects you, like Simon and Garfunkel were getting at, you can end up being a clown caught in the machine.
