SENKA – Community, Not Nation!

From An Anarchist Called Mutt.

A Pamphlet from the radical anti-national tendency, the capitalized letters of the Serbo-Croat version of the sentence “Self-management is the essence of our communism/anarchy” (Samouprava je Esencija Naleg Komunizma/ Anarhije) form the word SENKA, which is the name of the collective that signs this text, and is the Serbo-Croatian word for “shadow.’

Serbia: Letter to Students Around the World

From Balkan Anarchist Bookfair

Currently, in Serbia, students have full control over 62 out of 80 faculties. This is the largest student protest in our region since 1968. It was triggered by a series of tragic events caused by decades of repression, corruption, and violence perpetuated by the ruling regime. The opposition has so far proven itself incompetent with its methods, which is why we, the students, have taken matters into our own hands. We have suspended classes, dissolved all representative student bodies, self-organized plenums, voted on demands, formed work groups, and begun to apply pressure. We have moved into faculty buildings and adapted them for daily life. We have set up kitchens, dormitories, pharmacies, workshops, cinemas, and classrooms for self-education. In just three weeks, almost all university buildings in Serbia have become hubs for round-the-clock political self-organization. We have the full support of our fellow citizens, we survive on their donations, and every day, other vulnerable groups in society are joining our fight.

Report on activities during the International Week Against Non-Payment of Wages

In the third week of October, we have been highlighting the phenomenon of non-payment of wages for several years. This year, member sections and organizations close to the International Workers' Association (MAP) organized perhaps the most diverse forms of activities to date between October 14-20 - public meetings, pickets, discussion meetings and workshops, but also hanging banners, distributing thematic publications, stickers and posters in the streets, or sharing information about non-payment of wages in the online space.

Ecological Uprising, Antifascism and Anarchist Organizing in Serbia

From The Final Straw Radio

Serbia has been rocked by recent, mass blockades in the streets to challenge changes to the Law of Expropriation which would allow the state to take farm lands and other private property to open space for constructing mega projects and extraction like the proposed Rio Tinto lithium and jadarite mine in the Jadar Valley. This is building off of earlier ecological protests in 2021 against the building of private mini hydroelectric power plants along rivers in Stara Planina (aka the Balkan mountain range) threatening access to and health of drinking water. These protest in December forced the 12-year ruling right-neoliberal SNS Party to backtrack and modify plans for the Expropriation and public Referendum laws and put an undefined pause on Rio Tinto’s mine.

Serbia: The Latest Front in the COVID-19 Riots

From CrimethInc.

An Anarchist Perspective from Belgrade

Just outside the European Union, Serbia is the latest country in the COVID-19 era in which simmering unrest has given rise to open revolt. In this upheaval, as at the beginning of the Gilets Jaunes movement in France, protesters of every persuasion from fascists and football hooligans to liberals, leftists, and anarchists are competing to determine the shape of future protest movements. In the following account, anarchists in Belgrade describe a week of confrontations in the capital city, analyzing why it is important to prevent fascists from dominating clashes with the authorities and to prevent liberals from delegitimizing such clashes as “violent” or inherently fascist.

Serbia: Anarchists keep pressure up against damaging ‘micro-dams’

New protests took place this week pushing the government on its promises to halt a boom in environmentally-damaging projects across the region.

The region’s extensive network of waterways have been eyed for years as having hydroelectric potential, which originally led to plans for nearly 3,000 plants, around a third in environmentally-protected areas.
