The Montreal International Anarchist Theatre Festival: An Unofficial History

From Fifth Estate, #416, Spring 2025

Despite being one of the most misunderstood political ideologies of our times, anarchism has a long and beautiful history of developed political thought, well-organized and vast social movements, and a rich culture of art, literature, film, music, and theatre. Non-commercial, non-bourgeois, anarchist theatre. Well beyond any off-Broadway and off-Fringe. Intoxicating anarchist theatre, steeped in freedom and equality, humanity and hope for all.

Change the World: Have Fun, be Creative

From Fifth Estate, # 415, Summer 2024
by Norman Nawrocki

Imagine if more people believed in the power and the magic of collective creativity, what a crazy wonderful new anarchist world we could build. Under capitalism, any form of creativity is usually seen as an individual pursuit, the domain of the rich, the elite and artistes. It’s something to be commodified, re-packaged, and sold back to others as pop culture to be consumed.

Thank You: Montreal International Anarchist Theatre Festival Comes to an End

From Montreal International Anarchist Theatre Festival
September 20, 2024

After 18 years of incredible anarchist theatre, the Montreal International Anarchist Theatre Festival collective has decided to stop producing the festival.

We want to thank all the artists, volunteers, former collective members and the public who attended, for their generous contributions and support.

This was an all-volunteer festival with no government or corporate sponsorship.

Tom Walker, Don Quixote of the Living Theatre

From American Theatre March 1, 2024 By Joanie HF Zosike

Tom was an anarcho-pacifist man of action. He would have made a great Don Quixote, with his impressive stature and handsome visage, his earnest, powerful voice in turn soothing and convincing. He exuded a sense of urgency in an inexplicable world.
