Ben Morea in Exarchia

A Eulogy and Paean to Freedom

Ben Morea has passed away. Known for his participation in Up Against the Wall Motherfucker, the self-styled “street gang with an analysis” active in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the late 1960s, he withdrew from the city and pursued a path into revolutionary animism. In the following eulogy, Tasos Sagris of Void Network recounts Ben’s subsequent visit to Exarchia, the Athenian neighborhood famed as a hotbed of anarchism.

From Act for Freedom Now!

Our ability to speak and communicate does not allow us to venture down the unbeaten paths of personal accountability for the risks we take. Any discussion along these lines remains inevitably tentative and inadequate. To truly seek freedom — in its authentic and complete form, not in the counterfeit versions bestowed and imposed by the state — means entering into the realm of risk inherent in the quest itself. In this realm, our choices — often wild and solitary — carve out a path of no return. Freedom is a quality that is experienced by putting oneself at risk.

A Special Delivery to a Dearly Departed Wild One

The year is 2019. We’ve arrived in California from Kansas City. We decide to spend the night in the Bakersfield, California train yard where our train to Portland will be rolling in sometime in the morning. This will be my first time train hopping to a bookfair (Seattle Anarchist Bookfair), and my first time riding trains with Kota.
