In the last twenty years there has been a distancing from revolutionary ideas: the comrades themselves have stopped believing that their thought has the possibility and the ability to go further. Revolutionary ideas that instead are, today, more necessary than ever.

In the morning of May 3, with May Day in mind, we didn't miss the opportunity to break the precious panes of glass of the Fernández car dealership, finishing off by illuminating them with an encouraging insurrectionary fire.

A Promising Anti-Capitalist May Day
This May Day, Montreal’s annual anti-capitalist demonstration organized by the CLAC gathered in Jarry Park under the theme “No old normal, no new normal”. It was a sunny late afternoon, and the energy was high amid the banners and black flags as the demo began to snake through the residential streets of Villeray.

The ZACF is pleased to co-sign this statement along with anarchist groups around the world to commemorate May Day.
May 1st, 1886, a wide-ranging strike started in the United States demanding an eight-hour working day. The journey’s slogan was “Eight hours’ labour, Eight hours’ recreation, Eight hours’ rest”, propagandised since the mid-19th century and through which the labour movement struggled to seize power from Capital and dispute worker’s time for life, culture, and enjoyment.
The strike was prepared in advance. The American labour movement decided on it in 1884. To carry it out, hundreds of meetings and rallies were held, funds were collected, at times when union organising was illegal. Manifestos and newspapers were circulated encouraging workers to join the planned strike.

AF note: The following is from the IFA Secretariat who are currently the FAI in Italy (this role rotates amongst the Federations making up the membership of IFA). We previously published a nice read about the anarchist origins of Mayday including the Haymarket Affair in Chicago mentioned below. Also, our 25th anniversary issue of Organise! magazine 77 from a decade ago has articles we have previously published about the Paris Commune which was especially influential on the development of anarchist communism. Earlier in the year we also celebrated and remembered the bravery of the Kronstadt rebellion of 1921.

It’s hard to track how time flows in the quarantine. Events that happened long ago felt like they just happened yesterday, or the day before that. Meanwhile, the cries and calls of the last May Day still feel as fresh and ripe, as if the sun has set only once this past year. We can see why that is the case anyway. We still face the same issues. We still reject the repression forced onto us. We still reject the same impunity that continues to be strengthened by those in power, all while we are facing a crisis and threat to our own health.

A Decentralized Callout
A year ago, when the Covid-19 pandemic first made itself felt, some anarchists on occupied Duwamish Territory (Seattle) put out calls for decentralized actions on May 1st, the fighting holiday of the working classes.

“We Are the Shutdown”
Critical Mass is a project to get anarchists out into the street and causing trouble. Every month until May Day there'll be a new challenge which independent anarchists and crews will be able to creatively solve, naturally leading into higher levels of struggle with the systems of control with the intention of making an especially explosive May Day 2020.
