The Anarchists of Dune

From The Transmetropolitan Review

Across the world, the movie-watching public will soon behold the Fremen of Dune sack and destroy the Empire, starting on their homeworld of Arrakis. This irresistible moment, where the rebels actually win, is sure to sink into the mass-public consciousness, but despite all the Arabic names and parallels between spice and petroleum, the true story of the Fremen deserves to be told, especially now, given what’s at stake.

TOTW: Dinner and a Movie

netflix and anarchy!

After some years thinking about this, it seems to me like most people enjoy dinner. I’ve also discovered that a lot of them tend to like pictures that move …moving pictures, “movies.” The social sciences suggest that human beings have been doing something like the two things together for a while. Creating and consuming food while creating and consuming passive entertainment.

Unrest: An Intriguingly Minimalist Chronicle of 19th-Century Anarchy

It’s hard to think of a better title than the one writer-director Cyril Schäublin came up with for his second feature, which chronicles the political fervor swelling beneath the surface of a quiet, picturesque industrial town in late-19th century Switzerland.

“I’m Not A Marxist, I’m An Anarchist”

“I’m Not A Marxist, I’m An Anarchist”- Woody Harrelson

from Deadline by Anthony D'Alessandro

The movie, which Östlund bills as his “end of Western Civilazation,” follows a fashion model and her model casting agent partner, played by Charlbi Dean and Harris Dickinson, who wind up on luxury yacht, the poorest of those setting sail, and are ultimately stranded on a deserted island. Woody Harrelson plays a Marxist captain who gets drunk with a Russian oligarch, reads from the Communist manifesto and sends his yacht into rough waters until the passengers crap and vomit. Talking about how he feels about the character, Harrelson quipped “the character is Marxist. I’m not a Marxist, I’m an anarchist so in that sense we differ.” Then getting serious, “I’m guy who just thinks its abominable when a super power with all this military might with no provocation attacks, unprovoked, a country that is Ukraine,” said the Cheers alum and 3x Oscar nominee about Russia’s war.

Andrew is an Afro-Trinidadian solarpunk anarchist and YouTuber, and we’re excited to have him on the stream to chat about anarchism, Mardi Gras, Carnival, and more. In particular, we’ll take a look at the recent Batman movie The Batman and discuss anarchist perspectives on the franchise, along with boycotts in gaming, new releases, and other news.

TOTW: The Arts

There's no accounting for taste.

Some people like Sylvia Plath, some people like Ted Hughes. Some people like Twilight, some people like Die Hard. Some people, I hear, even like Mandalorian. People who go to all the same gigs can't agree on which movie to watch. People who love all the same novels fall out over which radio station to listen to in the car. When it comes to the arts, it's anarchy out there.

How has your anarchism shaped your taste in the arts, and how has your taste in the arts shaped your anarchism?
