Challenges of Police Investigations Into Anarchist Direct Actions

Let's say a few anarchists are planning an illegal, anonymous direct action. [...] The goals of the police are to prevent actions like this from taking place and/or identify and arrest the anarchists and gather enough evidence for them to be convicted. What can the police do to achieve these goals, depending on their motivation, their resources, the type of action, and the way the anarchists organize?

Blind The Beast // Operation Hermes

We, your friendly neighbourhood anarchists from Minneapolis, Los Angeles, New York City, Akron, Atlanta, Baltimore, Winston-Salem, and Montreal, linked together by a common mission, implore you to join us in dismantling the surveillance apparatus and, from its remains, creating new tools which facilitate learning, art-making, life saving, and liberation.

Named Groups And Combative Anarchism

From Scenes From The Atlanta Forest

It's important to me that the critiques of named groups reviving in the states context is not limited to questions of anonymity and anti-repression. The "pitfalls of named groups isolating and cutting themselves off through this label" was briefly mentioned, but the container of a named group, however informal/decentralized/a ghostly-aberration, is worth exploring more.

Protest: A Security Nightmare

During a recent protest in a small town we have observed terrible security practices that we would like to point out.

In general, we do not think that protests are a good use of comrades' time and energy. We think that engaging in protests exhausts activists by corralling them into prescribed march routes and coaxing them into a sense of having 'accomplished something' while in reality the have only strengthened the state by providing data about the strategies and risk profiles of activists as well as practice responding to them. We do not feel that this increases activists' freedom or political power. We are not necessarily opposed to spur-of-the-moment participation in actions as opportunities arise, but we think there are important factors to take into consideration:

TOTW: Fear and Decision on New Year’s Eve

The date is December 31st of 2019: Governed subjects everywhere are the target of fear from state terror, channeled into obedience and acquiescence by the chilling effect of repression. Blackmailed into compliance by the economy, their subsistence on the line. Looming deadlines summon waves of dread which plummet like lead in your gut. Panic triggered by cyclic crisis flows through your nerves like strychnine.

Generalized anxiety has been called the dominant affect of our era. We all seek shelter in delusions of Safety and Security, in denial of the fact that we'll die anyways, so we should enjoy doing what we want. Everything that we want in life is on the other side of that fear, and the only path is through it.
