Why are masks required? Are people still concerned about covid or is it to 'mask' your identity?
How is a mask mandate consistent with free association and acting by consensus? I saw the sign for this event and was interested in attending, but will I be banned for not wearing a mask?
A few words from David Graeber:
"Another basic anarchist principle is voluntary association. This is simply a matter of applying democratic principles to ordinary life. The only difference is that anarchists believe it should be possible to have a society in which everything could be organized along these lines, all groups based on the free consent of their members, and therefore, that all top-down, military styles of organization like armies or bureaucracies or large corporations, based on chains of command, would no longer be necessary. Perhaps you don’t believe that would be possible. Perhaps you do. But every time you reach an agreement by consensus, rather than threats, every time you make a voluntary arrangement with another person, come to an understanding, or reach a compromise by taking due consideration of the other person’s particular situation or needs, you are being an anarchist — even if you don’t realize it."

hey, while the David Graeber excerpt is appreciated, I don’t think it fully responds to why masks are required. I am not an organizer or affiliated in any official context with this event, so I cannot speak to their specific intentions with requiring masks. however, what I can say is that mask requirements are to make spaces more accessible and safe for folks in the community who are immunocompromised and have vulnerable immune systems (I am included in this community). while the defining characteristics of anarchism is a horizontal power structure that acts in popular consensus, it also maintains the protection of individuals in the community. this is an event held in a very small, contained space that draws an incredible amount of people. I don’t know if you’ve ever attended the Seattle anarchist book fair, but it is incredibly busy, with very little room to move around. the event is also held at a time where sickness and infection levels are high, for flu and Covid, as well as other contagious diseases that can disable various community members. masks aren’t just to protect against covid. masks are a widely accepted global practice during periods of high risk for infection, to which the US is not accustomed. anarchism is not about alienated individualism in which people can do whatever they want because they’re anarchists. there is also a deep history and practice of popular consensus—as you mention—and community protection. you are equally as free to not attend because you don’t want to wear a mask as you are to wear a mask and help protect your more vulnerable comrades.
