In this episode we are joined by Kristian Williams, anarchist historian and author of Our Enemies in Blue: Police and Power in America, and Garrett, an anti-repression activist and anarchist legal worker who resisted repression as one of the RNC 8.
The conversation covers:
- How models of policing protest have shifted over time
- How they are shifting again today and why it matters
- How this can inform repression preparation and response
Stay tuned after the interview for a poem by Malik Farrad Muhammad, a political prisoner from the George Floyd and Breonna Taylor Uprisings.

Re: counter-repression and leader co-opting

In short, if you do not like leaders (and they are always the bread and butter of "movements") you have to be a leader yourself, and one should not accept leaders in times where nothing is really going on...that generally leads to some sort of repression. The purpose of anarchist activism should be to have dynamic leaders and followers, i would theorize. I can't imagine sound anarchist ethics any other way. "To each according to their need", to repeat a cliche. Don't ask me to do what you can easily do yourself.
In terms of legality, honestly, good luck with any of that, as the state keeps coffers of laws on the books, some of the old ones on the books sound totally ridiculous to modern people because pro-state culture shifts pretty rapidly and mercilessly. Not even lawyers know how things will go in court all the time. I just bought insurance for my insurance, so that I am properly insured!
I've went to more protests than I can really remember, and they always seem to make more vulnerable to either my own wandering mind or repressive behavior.
