Debates have been been a fixture in the world of ideas ever since the second person to have an idea. It's been mostly downhill since then.
The concept takes many forms, from scholarly competition to drunken spats, in parliamentary procedure or public forums. Despite plenty of research showing that debate doesn't change minds, it is promoted as a prime vector for the spread of ideas, be it on the stage of an arena surrounded by cameras or in the center of a city park surrounded by occupiers or after hours in a university classroom surrounded by bad haircuts.
Friendly debate can be had relatively easily with philosophical near-neighbors - a syndicalist and a anarcho-communist can get along just fine in most cases - but as that distance increases, the "time for debate being over" tends to draw nearer and nearer. Queer anarchists, for example, often hold "no debate" as a point of principle that they are not willing to discuss their existence with those who wish to eradicate it, such as TERFs.
Debate is something we have all likely participated in throughout our lives as anarchists. The Beautiful Idea is, after all, an idea, and one in conflict with many other ideas. Some anarchists engage with that ideological conflict by denying the opponent a platform to express their views, some value open-air expression across the board, and some even go so far as to print things they disagree with in order to challenge people they like to think more about what they believe.
What is debate to you?
Do you enjoy intellectual sparring with friends and acquaintances?
Or does the whole ordeal of rehashing the same points with different people sound exhausting to you?
What role does debate play in your anarchism? Attractive or destructive? Do you try to sway, or to demolish?
What is the line between your debate and your conflict?
Many people here will say that they have no interest in changing minds; if you're one of those people, how does that influence what kind of conversations you get into and which you avoid?
Is there a marketplace of ideas, and do you have a merch table there?

People only do debate for the audiences sake, using dogwhistles, to establish who is in and out of the group. If you agree you are in and if you disagree you are out. It was never about changing minds it's about spreading propaganda and establishing an ingroup. As the Fash get more bold, we need to bash harder and get better at shutting them tf up.

If you look at one debate and try then ask people in the debate or watching it if their minds changed, yes you usually find that minds didn't change much. But other studies that look at cumulative impact of many debates over a longer period of time show that debates contribute to highly persuasive environments that do have an impact. When I think about my own ideas, I know that debates from decades ago have shaped them. Especially when no one is paying attention to the issues, so there is not a lot of social pressure. So I think debates play an important part in how opinions are shaped.

Than debate, because debate is about "winning the argument"
